John McKay family: Bonhill, Jamestown - 1874-1916
« on: Friday 10 November 06 20:35 GMT (UK) »
My gg grandfather was John McKay (b.c. 1845).  John fathered at least 16 children.  His first family (of 7) was with wife Jane CALDWELL.  Children were: Samuel, George, Jessie, Thomas (all born Glasgow), John, Joseph Coulter, James Coulter (born Balloch).

The family moved to Ballach about 1874.  In 1882, Jane died.  John married Elizabeth "Bessie" SMITH in Jamestown in Sept 1884.  They lived at Napierston Terrace in Jamestown (until at least the 1901 census).  Children were: Alexander, Samuel, David Smith, Jane, Agnes (my grandmother), Robert McWhennie, Catherine, and Peter MacFarlane.

John died in 1916 in Jamestown.  Although I have had some success in tracking the children, those that did not emigrate to the U.S. or Canada have remained a mystery.

Any information re this family would be gratefully received.  Those children who remained in Scotland were - Alexander Smith McKay (b. 1885, Bonhill), David Smith McKay (b, 1888, Bonhill), Robert McWhennie McKay (b. 1897, Bonhill), Joseph Coulter McKay (b. 1878, Balloch), John McKay (b. 1877, Balloch), and Thomas Morton McKay (b.1873, Glasgow).
