SMITH/WILSON families, Eastwood, 1856-1883
« on: Friday 10 November 06 20:51 GMT (UK) »
My gg grandparents were Alexander SMITH (b.c. 1830, son of James and Sarah) and Agnes Stewart (b. 1835, dau. of Alexander and Mary) who married in July 1856,  Busby, Mearns.
I haven't been able to locate them on the 1861 census, but I do know they had 3 children (Mary, James, Sarah) by that time - all born in Mearns or Eastwood.  Alexander died of pneumonia in Sept 1868 in Busby, leaving Agnes with a family of seven (added Alexander, Agnes, Elizabeth, and Jane - all born in Busby or Eastwood).  (I do not know the difference between the two towns).  Couldn't find the family (ScotsPeople) on either the 1861 or 1871 census (I could be blind, or at least, unaware of Renfrewshire districts).

Agnes remarried in Busby in Dec 1872 to widower Thomas WILSON. Two sons were born, Peter and Alexander in Uddington and Cathcart.  The Wilsons and at least 3 children from her 1st marriage emigrated to New England about 1883. On the 1881 census living at Woodbine Cottage Busby,Mearns, RFW
Thomas WILSON M 50  M Irl, Head  Occ: Plasterer Master
Agnes WILSON M 45  F IRL, Wife
Peter WILSON   6  M Uddingston, Lks, Son, Scholar
Alexander WILSON   5  M Cathcart, RFW, Son, Scholar
Elizabeth SMITH   14  F Busby, RFW, Step Daur, Factory Worker

Can someone help with the Thomas Wilson side of the family - and with any advice re the Smith branch?

Brian

Just if the topographical information helps with this exchange - Mains Toll Newland may be in Eastwood or Pollock, Newlands being a locality between the two, in the north part of Eastwood Parish. Eastwood was a parish in East Renfrewshire lying between Pollock on the north and Mearns to the south. Busby lay on the banks of the White Cart River in the north-east corner of Mearns Parish and on the east bank in the Parish of East Kilbride, Lanarkshire. It was a cotton spinning town in the 19th century. Mearns, Eastwood, part of Cathcart and Eaglesham make up Eastwood District in the 1980s, since expanded as East Renfrewshire. Busby lies about 2 miles outside Glasgow City Boundary on its south side. You would enter Eastwood Parish about a mile north-west of Busby; Clarkston, as a place on the map, lies between them.
