CROFSLEY
« on: Saturday 11 November 06 15:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi, has anyone heard of the Crofsley family, I have a birth certificate for a Lydia Broadbent born in 1852, Martha Crofsley is the mothers maiden name, Martha married William Broadbent, in 1850, Huddersfield (I think).
Any information would be great.
Thanks

It's not Crofsley. The "f" is an s and the name is Crossley.

Hi Jan

I agree with Pauline, the name is probably Crossley.

Have a look at this site http://amberskyline.com/treasuremaps/oldhand.html which gives examples of old handwriting.

Scroll down the page and you will see an example of the name Jesse which looks like Jefse.  I think this will explain it better than I can.

Hi,

I had a look at freebmd and yes I found a marriage for broadbent & crossley (not the one I'm looking for tho') and yes, it did look like Crofsley.

Thanks to you both for taking the time and interest

John Crossley was a mine owner.  He had the Sharlston colliery (near Wakefield), and probably others too.  I am sure I've seen the Crossley name quite a few times in my searching for other names in the Wakefield reg. district.
