Was Whitchurch in Shropshire around 1830's?
« on: Sunday 12 November 06 10:46 GMT (UK) »
If so, could any kind person look in the Trade Directories I am trying to find a tailor who lived in Bettisfield near Hanmer his name was William Turner.

He could have worked in Whitchurch or WEM around 1830's.  Could anyone help, because Bettisfield is on the border of Flintshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire its proving quite difficult to find him.

His wife was called Jane and children were Martha 1819, Ann 1820, Jane 1822, Martha 1824, Emma 1826, Elizabeth 1829, William 1831 and Harriet 1834!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi

Bettisfield has always been in Flintshire and Whitchurch in Shropshire as far as my records show.

Have you thought of looking at the Wrexham,Denbighshire area or Ellesmere, Shropshire

Gadget

Son William was bpt Hanmer, Flint on 15 January 1832.

Another thought -

The Clwyd FH Society have produced a CD Rom of North Wales Trade Directories, 1818 -1936

http://www.clwydfhs.org.uk/misc_pubs.html

It might be worth getting hold of it.

Hi Gadget

Thank you for the information but I am really at my wits end now and I could do with a sounding board.

I am trying to find this William Turner.  I know he was born 1788 in Bettisfield, Hanmer and lived there from 1788 when he was born to 1834 when his last child above was born  and that he was a tailor, after this he disappears with his wife and family and I cannot find them anywhere on any 1841 census.

I have only found his son William born 1831 in Bettisfield, Hanmer in the 1851 census married and living in Tansey Green, Pensett, Staffordshire but none of his sisters, mother or father.

I cannot find any death for him or his family so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Can I mull this over, Dorey.

If you can't find them on the 1841, the most likely reason is that they were in one of those EDs that are missing around the Wrexham area.

Have you got the marriage certs of the children? Does it say whether William was alive? it doesn't alway signify but they might give some info. As he was a tailor, I would think he would have stayed in the Hanmer area.

I'll have a think and get back to you. Not promising anything but I'll have a try  ;)

Hi Gadget

Anything you could think of would be welcome.

I have the marriage certificate of the son William Turner born 1831 Bettisfield, Hanmer he was married at the Parish Church in the Parish of Kingswinford, Stafford on November 3rd 1850 and it states he was a miner living at Barnett Lane, and his father was William Turner, Tailor he married a Susannah Morris.  I have tried to look if William Turner who was the tailor lived on Barnett Lane, Kingswinford but have found none.

Struggling like Gadget - I have found young William in the 1881 census living in Marchwiel - with wife & 4 children - born in Staffs and Denbighshire.

Trouble is with having daughters it means it is more difficult to find if they married and parents lived with them.
Presume if 2 Martha's born first one must have died young.

Cheers

Keith

Hi Keith

Yes, its too frustrating for words, I can find William the son 1831, in all the census from 1851 onwards but not the 1841 and yes because two Hanmer records were destroyed, i.e. marriage and deaths, I cannot locate his sisters marriages or their deaths.
