Help - I am teaching FH this weekend
« on: Monday 13 November 06 14:24 GMT (UK) »
This Saturday I am teaching my first class on how to Begin researching and recording you family history.

OBVIOUSLY I will be directing the students to Rootschat, especially the beginners board.  Would it be better for them to create their own log in for Rotschat or should I create a generic login for all the 8 students to use?

The class is only a short 4 hour quickie (9 - 1) but obviously I want them to be able to find out a least one thing about their families.

I'd be tempted to give them each their own login's.

The people on Roots are pretty quick at getting an answer up.

Everyone coming to your class must have a question or two anyway, or a family story that requires some more info............so why not give them their own Roots log-in. That way they can continue when they get home.

On the other hand, at the recent BBC Family History Day, the "Radio Gloucs" worked quite well;
RootsChatters knew it was happening, and kept an eye out for these posts.

I would be tempted to apply for a new name "FH Class" and also put this at the beginning of the title of all posts.

As with Radio Gloucs, a couple of your students may well then join RootsChat and carry on from there, but not all will.

Good luck, and enjoy !!

Or...

Sign them all up with their own Rootschat ID, then put FH class as the beginning of each thread (in the subject line).

This needs no help from Admin (who might not be available at the mo) and doesn't need to be changed if they do decide to join us.  We will still be able to spot them easily and the titles of the threads can be amended if they decide to stay!

Best of luck Sue - I know you will do a super job, cos I've seen you in action!

 ;)

Thanks for the replies.

I think I will get them all to create a log in (they are possibly more likely to continue then) and put FH at the beginning.

I have ben through my PowerPoint about a zillion times, got every thing perfect and then checked the computers at work - guess what - problems accessing some sites because of the restrictions, so I have had to change my presentation slightly!

Still the goody bag they are getting at the end is fantastic AND contains one of the leaflets from the Glos day regarding Rootschat!

Thanks,  I have just created a generic log in to use on Saturday (FH Course Tewks) mainly so that I could create a handout of how to create a log in, but also for any one to use who does not have an email address of their own yet!

Ha Ha as you can see I forgot to log off and log back on as me before posting this  ;D
