Since we were talking about the Boer War, I wasn't thinking of militia battalions.

It's another avenue for John to look at anyway! :)

Neil, I'm pleased that you say 'possibly', as my suggestion isn't a certainty, my first thought was also the 5th Lancers but the 5th battalion of the RIR could be worth investigating further.

I can't think of any other 5th Royal Irish's.

John, it wasn't uncommon for men to join the militia and then to go on and sign up for the regular army.

Hi John:
I think that you can cross out the 5th Royal Irish Rifles. My grandfather was in it and they didn't ship out to SA until April 1901.
