It looks as though the school was in Bowden Hill Crediton.  That is in the heart of Crediton, which is too far from Nymet Rowland.      Blow!!   Sue

Perhaps this Mr Horn of Doon's School was a caretaker or something and in charge of the servants??  He might have lived on the premises, I suppose and oversaw the daily cleaning etc., though I'm only speculating here.

Ok Sue, am really grateful to you for doing this.  It gets into your blood, doesn't it?

Uuumm!  But Dunn school was not in Bowden hill in 1911.  Otherwise it would be on the 1911  census.  I can't find where it was.  I thought for a moment that it was in the same village as the Horn family, - that would be the ideal senario, but I don't think so.

I wonder whether it is worth you contacting the Devon Record office and asking them what they know about Dunn School - or even Doon School.

Googled Pitt cottages again and it actually came up with Pitt Court., in a village about 20 miles away.
Perhaps 'Pitt Cottages' were in the heart Crediton at the time.

I'll have another look.
Sue

PS Yes, there were 4 cottages.  I wonder where in Crediton they were?
Frederick Horn was a wagoner

Right!
Pitt cottages were in Crediton Hamlets, which was a parish right on the edge of Crediton.
So if she was at Dunn School, (which I assume was in the centre of Crediton - as I cannot find it anywhere else) then Crediton Hamlets was not far away!!

Perhaps he was a relative of the Mr Horn of Doons School?  Interesting about Frederick being a wagoner - I suppose he could've had a carriage too and taken his relative to and from the school but am more likely to believe this Mr Horn was of some standing for the orphanage to release Jenny (or any child) into his care.  This gets more and more interesting - I need a cup of tea, what about you?  ;D

This site keeps blocking my replies to you????

Whoa, forget the tea, where's the bacardi? So, if this guy Frederick Horn is a relative then he could've provided the transport to and from the school but I'm more inclined to think Mr Horn lived in at the school.  What do you think?

I just googled Doon's School Devon and a weblink shows up in the listings saying 'some villas were used for educational purposes'  then I lost it again
