1881 census lookup request please
« on: Friday 17 November 06 13:59 GMT (UK) »
I would be most grateful if anybody has the resources to look for the following on the 1881 census

Frederick Thomas Bourne PHILPOTT b1857 Saltwood Kent England

I am assuming that he may be in Scotland at the time of the 1881 census as he cannot be found in England and in 1891 he turns up (back in England) with a Scottish wife (Eliza) and a couple of children born in Scotland (the eldest age 8 in 1891).

Many thanks

Hi Casalguidi,

The only one that I could see that really fitted was.

Frederick Thomas Philpott Soldier unmar, 24 (pob) Kent
also noted on the line above is William Fredk Philpott Soldier unmar, 23 (pob) Kent.

address given is Piershill Barracks, Jocks Lodge, south Leith, Edingburgh.

unfortunately it does not say which regiment.

Hi Old Rowley

I'm sure that's him - I was thinking that he was probably in the army or something to have been in Scotland ;D

He had a brother William Frank (2 years younger) so I am now wondering if that's his brother and it should read "Frank" rather than "Fredk" :-\

Many thanks

Just had another look and it is given as Wm. Fredk.
knowing how badly some of the 1881 has been transcribed it could well be Frank (same amount of letters and a possible stab at the name by the person reading it off before typing it in,,,,,,,,,,,,,,that sort of thing). Now all you have to do is find out what regiment that Frederick was in (might be on marriage certificate). There is also noted a troop serj' , a farrier, and a saddler so it would indicate that it was amounted regiment of some sort.

This looks like the marriage in 1881:

1881   PHILPOTT FREDERICK THOMAS and WATSON ELIZABETH in BLACKFRIARS   GLASGOW CITY/LANARK   GROS Ref: 644/05 0192

Hi Monica

That's wonderful - thankyou ;D

It would certainly be the correct one as one of their children had the middle name of WATSON

Frederick seems to have left the army by the time of his wedding, he's down as a Blacksmith's labourer. If you can PM me with an email, happy to send more info.
