Dickies On Cumbrae
« on: Saturday 18 November 06 21:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello  :),
John Dickie married Agnes McColl in 1857, Cumbrae. He was b. in West Kilbride.
He is described later as a farmer at  Meikle.
I don't seem to be able to find any Dickies on Cumbrae.
Please can anyone help?
Regards,
Inchworm

Hi Inchworm

I'm being slow this evening! What period are you looking at for Dickie's in Cumbrae. I can see some 'DICK' (no Dickies), including two Johns b. Scotland, in the 1841 Census.

Regards.

John & Agnes were m. 1857 Cumbrae. Her parents were Archibald & Jane McColl. I don't know anything about them.
John & Agnes first child also Agnes born end of 1857. I didn't know how long they stayed on Cumbrae. They later went to Greenock, but when looking on the will index I found
"Dickie John 11/12/1899 sometime Farmer, Island of Meikle Cumbrae, thereafter residing in Greenock, d. 25/03/1875 at Greenock".
Most of Johns brothers & sisters lived at Rothesay between 1845 and 1900. Any info. on Dickies in Rothesay would be appreciated too.
I am sorry if I sound vague.

John and Agnes had left Cumbrae by 1860 when another of their children was born in Greenock:

1. JANE DICKIE  Birth: 31 DEC 1860 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
2. JAMES DICKIE Birth: 26 FEB 1865 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
3. ANN DICKIE Birth: 21 MAR 1863 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
4. DUGALD MCCOLL DICKIE Birth: 16 JUN 1867 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

What was John's birth year in West Kilbride and do you have the name of his parents from his MC or DC?

In the 1851 census there is a John Dickie, aged 20 in Cumbrae

Ref 552 - 2 - 11

There's no image available. I presume this is him.

PS He is the only Dickie in Cumbrae on the 1851

It's not the same John. John was born c. 1818 and is still at home in West Kilbride in the 1851 Census (FreeCen).

Inchworm, from the little I have seen, John Snr. was a farmer. Some of his children seemed to have gone over to Bute. In the 1851 Census, one of his grandchildren, with a Bute birth place, is with him in West Kilbride (son of James who shows in North Bute in 1851?). Your John went over to Bute at some point after the 1851 Census. Was it then he acquired an interest in Cranslagvourity Farm in North Bute? By the end of the 1850s, he left Bute for Greenock where he had more children and died in 1875 intestate.  Twenty five years later in 1899, his will/testament (not sure which or what) was settled. Have you seen the entry for Cranslagvourity in www.butesonsanddaughters.co.uk/farmsag.shtml. Dickie family show there in the 1881 Census apart from Rothesay.

I think it may be worthwhile looking at the 3 pg documents to find out the background.

The grandson showing in 1851 can't be son of James.......he's showing as a Wilson. Must be son of daughter Ann, is this her marriage:

JOHN WILSON  Marriages: Spouse:  ANN DICKIE
Marriage:  05 JUN 1842  Cumbraes, Bute, Scotland

The Dickie connections to Cumbraes may go further back or relate to this marriage? There is only one Dickie showing in Bute in the 1841 Census, a Hugh b. Scotland c. 1826, an agr. lab.

The 1875 death looks as if it's a drowning. Writing is very poor. Also possibly registered in deaths at sea (marginal note)  - again poor writing.

So is the 1851 Cumbrae John a relative?
