Hello,
I downloaded the later will, 11 pages. It looks like Johns son James, being the eldest son, inherited a large amount from his Grandparents, James Dickie & Jean (Workman). As Johns farm at Fencefoot was 50 acres and James was at  Cranslagvourtie in 1851 with 100 acres, I guess that he had either inherited the farm or had a windfall!!
Next generation : when John married Agnes McColl at Cumbrae in 1857 her parents Archibald McCol and Agnes (Carmichael) were also farmers. I don't know when her parents died. Perhaps John often returned to help them out. Just a thought.

I thought you'd find this photo fun:

Wow Monica, that was a great picture. So John & Ann Allen had a famous porch. I love old snippets like that. When your not familiar with an area (like me with Bute) it brings it all alive.
Thank you all for your help. I am busy piecing the Dickies all together now. Are there any free sites for the 1871 & 1881 census? I seem to have spent so much lately on family history related items.

Costs of research do mount up!

There are no free sites that I'm aware of for the 1871/81 Censuses. The 1881 Census is not too bad as it is only two units (search & view). You might find a friendly soul with access to the 1881 on CD who can do a job lot set of look-ups!

Tempus fugit . The postings are all a bit dated . They do however bring back memories of a childhood spent in Millport , Isle of Cumbrae . The Dickies referred to , farmed on the Wee Cumbrae / Little Cumbrae /Meikle Cumbrae which was about 700 acres and about a mile to the south of Big Cumbrae . . It has a lighthouse which was a favourite trip we kids took each summer . There was a watch tower on the highest point said to have been erected to spy the Norse intruders back before the Battle of Largs . The supply boat came into Millport each day to pick up rolls and bread and other supplies . Memories !
