No idea, Gadget. Not showing on FreeCen so can't tell whether he is the John Dick that shows in Cumbrae in 1841.

Inchworm has now signed off, so let's see tomorrow.

Regards.

From the 1881 Census, the family at Cranslagvourity Farm, seems to be the widow of James Dickie (brother of John?), married in 1853 in North Bute, and family:

AGNES PEEBLES     Parents: Father: WILLIAM PEEBLES
Marriages: Spouse: JAMES DICKIE
Marriage:  14 JAN 1853  North Bute, Bute, Scotland

Regards.

I had a look at the 1841 in search of the John Dickie, aged 20, that I found in 1851. There's only one family of Dick that I could find including a John, 15-19 and a Robert, aged 9. So a bit of a mystery there. Maybe the 1851 one was a cousin or something  :-\

Hello  :)
Many thanks for all your replies. I have purchased the will of John Dickie senior. It is 11 pages of very difficult reading !!! It seems that his eldest son James, inherited Cranslagvourity Farm, North Bute, from Johns father. Trouble is it doesn't mention Johns fathers name. Any help on this? Desperate to find out.
Johns dau. Mary had 3 children, Jean, Mary and William, but doesn't say who she married.
The trustees are John Allen, who I believe was the second husband of Johns dau. Ann. He was about 20 yrs older than her. Funny thing is, John Allens mother was an Elizabeth Dickie. Can't find if related.
One of the other trustees was James Crawford, farmer in Cumbrae. There is a James Crawford on the IGI married a Jean Dicky 1809 Kilbride & Arran. Don't know if this is another relation. The final trustee was a Daniel Crawford.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Inchworm  :)

Have you got John Snr. death cert? He's there in 1851, hopefully he made it past official reg. in 1855.

There is this submitted entry which feels like his:

John Dickie  Birth: 01 OCT 1771  West Kilbride, Ayr, Scotland
Death:  24 MAR 1856
Parents: Father: James Dickie    Mother:  Jean Workman

There are numerous actual/submitted entries for children to James Dickie and Jean Workman in West Kilbride, including this actual entry for a Jean who may be the one that married James Crawford in 1809:

JEAN DICKIE  Christening:  05 NOV 1775   West Kilbride, Ayr, Scotland
Parents: Father: JAMES DICKIE    Mother: JEAN WORKMAN

Can you do a parent search on IGI, or do you want me to post/explain how to so you can see their children?

These are the details, including father's name for one of the trustees, John Allen:

JOHN ALLAN
Parents: Father: ANDREW ALLEN    Mother: ELISABETH DICKIE
Marriages: Spouse: ANN DICKIE
Marriage:  14 JAN 1858  West Kilbride, Ayr, Scotland
Husband Age at Marriage:  64
Wife Age at Marriage:  42

John Allan could have been a first cousin. There was an Elizabeth born to James Dickie and Jean Workman, sister to John Snr.:

ELIZABETH DICKIE  Christening: 02 NOV 1769 West Kilbride, Ayr, Scotland

As Monica has said his father was John Dickie, farmer.,deceased by 1875 when he died. This is from his death cert. of 1875.

It's getting confusing now because we are jumping back lines! I believe Inchworm is referring to the grandfather's name of the John who died in 1875 (father of his father John Snr.).
