Thanks Michael & Jenn.

Michael, with Charles Edwins father now known as James (see Jenn's post) does this help with a possible connection?

hi there
james tranter married ellen reilley he does have children with ellen. now helena tranter was 17 at the time of her marriage to thomas cushion helena states on her wedding cert that her father was james tranter. i am asuming it is this james who married ellen by her wedding cert she would have been born c1874. now this is what i find impossible. the same james died in 1872 how can helena be his daughter. there is no record of a birth of helena tranter anywhere in australia. am i missing something here.does anyone have any veiws on this.
many thanks
michael

Hi Michael

I saw your request re the "Tranter" family in South Australia and I did some research when I was in the State Libray a few days ago.

I have not found very much at all, but the following is what I did find:-

ARRIVALS FROM OVERSEAS

Francis Tranter, wife and two daughters including Mary arrived in South Australia 16th November 1840 aboard the 'DIADEM" which sailed from London 31st June 1840 via Plymouth.

Also on the'DIADEM" were:-

Ellen Tranter, Lucy E. Tranter, Teresa Tranter.

The following were aboard the "DIADEM" as well.

R. Carson, W.Hilton and B. Barwick, with John Tranter, wife Ellen three daughters and Ezechial, and James all aboard the 'DIADEM"

MARRIAGE

Theresa Tranter born c1834 place of birth not recorded, married Robert Carson 25th July 1853 and died 23rd Decemebr 1910 at Halbury South Australia.

Robert Carson also sailed aboard the 'DIADEM" with the Tranter family

Robert Carson was born c1828, place unknown and died 1st November 1913 at Alberton District Port Adelaide.

The above is all I have been able to find, but I hope it is of some interest to someone.

hi twinkleberry
many thanks for that this robert carson was he a member of the tranter family
i dont like to ask this but do you have any info on helena tranter. who married thomas cushion. i find this confusing, james her father. died in 1872. according to her wedding cert she was 17 when she married thomas that makes her born 1874 2 years after her fathers death. was she telling a few white lies about her age. i cant find a birth cert for her anywhere in aus. i found something else out. i cant find a death cert for her either under the name cushion. did she marry again.
many thanks michael

hello  there Michael

I  guess  that  it  is  possbile she  was  born  between  the  time  james  tranter died  in 1872  to  when  ellen  remarried  in 1888  that  is  a  long  time  for a  young  widow with  a  few children  to  look  after to  be  by  herself  Perhaps  she was  in a defacto  relationship also  her age  could  be  mistranscribed  she may  have been  27 not seventeen  I  do  also  wonder  if  the Church  she was  married  in  might  still  hold  records  etc

I have  this feeling  that  I  have seen  something  for  unregistered  births  in South Australia  like a cd  or book  but cannot  remember  where  >:(
