1841 census lookup request
« on: Monday 20 November 06 11:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
can someone find these children and the rest of their family on the 1841 census.
They are probably living in Dewsbury.

Robert RAYNER-age 22-born Birstall-Carpet Weaver
Daniel Rayner-age 11-born Dewsbury
Mary Rayner-age 9-born Dewsbury.

Their parents may be a Robert and Martha Rayner.

Many thanks,
Trisha ;D ;D ;D

Hi Ian,
Many thanks,
that looks like the right family but where's Daniel?
He's definately alive by 1851 so he must be with someone else when the census was taken in 1841.
Is he anywhere abouts?

Can't find a Daniel Rayner in Yorkshire - could it not be Samuel - some similarity in the sound of the name.  mind, I can't find Daniel in 51 either.

Hi Ian,
In 1851 he is a lodger living with :-
Robert RAYNER-head-age 32-M-Carpet Weaver-born Birstall
They live at Boothroy Lane,Dewsbury,Yorkshire
HO107/2324/288/9

I must admit I've always assumed that Robert and Daniel were brothers, perhaps I'm wrong.
Cousins?

Hi

Found him in 51, transcribed as Rayne, but he's 24 not 21.

None of the Daniels around Dewsbury in 41 resemble Rayne or Rayner.  However, there is this, as Daniel can be misread as David (though it is clearly David in this one)

HO107/1299/5 f41 p12

Gate Head, Elland cum Greatland

John Rayner 45 Wire Drawer
Love             45
John             25   "
DAVID          15   "
Harriet         14
Isaac           12
Mary             9
Jane             7

All born within county

Though Mary is with that family also in 51, but not David.  Indeed, couldn't find a David Rayne/Rayner within 5 years of 1817.

Sorry for muddying the waters

Hi Ian,
no you're not muddying the waters you're makiing it more interesting ;)A challenge.
What a lovely name-Love.I've never come across that one before.
There is one more option.
In later Census' Daniel says he's from Ossett(where is that in relation to Dewsbury-sorry I'm a soft southerner).Perhaps he's in Ossett.

Hi TrishaG
Ossett is 3.5 miles from Dewsbury

OSSETT, in the parish of Dewsbury, Agbrigg-division of Agbrigg and Morley, liberty of Wakefield, 2½ miles W. of Wakefield, 3 from Dewsbury.

Hi Trisha
1841
There are 14 Daniel's in Ossett, and 13  Rayners, but no Daniel Rayner's. Unless he had a middle name and used that for the 1841 census.
