I went to a memorial service this afternoon of a chap who was a keen genealogist and who had discovered that one of his ancestors, a Thames lighterman, had been in the escort of Horatio Nelson's body on its return to this country. He was delighted one day to have tracked down the location of this forebear's cutlass, only to find when he telephoned the distant relative who had it in his possession "Oh, that rusty old sword that was in the garage? I threw it out a few weeks ago".
I hope he will have better luck tracing his ancestors where he is now. RIP
