Another "if only"
« on: Monday 20 November 06 18:41 GMT (UK) »
I went to a memorial service this afternoon of a chap who was a keen genealogist and who had discovered that one of his ancestors, a Thames lighterman, had been in the escort of Horatio Nelson's body on its return to this country. He was delighted one day to have tracked down the location of this forebear's cutlass, only to find when he telephoned the distant relative who had it in his possession "Oh, that rusty old sword that was in the garage? I threw it out a few weeks ago".

I hope he will have better luck tracing his ancestors where he is now. RIP

What a terrible shame...  I wish we could become less of a throw away nation!

Oh Nick what a shame.  I saw a chap selling his Grandad's pocket watch with a photo inside on David Dickinson's programme the other week.  Along with it was his G Grandads watch also with a photo, the chap said

'oh I don't know who that is bit I presume it's my G Grandfather'  :o :o :o :( :(

What I wouldn't give for even a blurry image  ???

Kerry I understand what you are saying but I was wondering the other day - I have masses amounts of photos of my family (alive now) and I know my mother in law has a loft full.  We will all have to start storing on CDs as I'm not sure where future generations are going to keep all this 'stuff'  It's a shame as I do love 'real' photographs  ???

What a pity the chap didn't tell the person who threw the cutless out, that it was now worth a small fortune...that would have given him a few sleepless nights  :D ;)

Wheeldon, that is awful  :o fancy selling your great grandfather.  I've heard of people selling their granny for a pint of beer, but not their great grandfather  ::)
