Help please with William Rushton
« on: Monday 20 November 06 21:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I have a William  Rushton born abt 1850 in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

Trouble is I can't find any birth record for him on the IGI and  I can't find him  on census prior to his marriage. I can't even  find a birth year for him in  the Ashbourne  dist. And nothing at all for his marriage. He's a ghost in the true sense of the word. >:(

In 1871 he is with wife Hannah

William Rushton 21
Hannah      "      24
Arthur        "        2
George      "        3mts

All said to be born in Ashbourne and  living in Dove house green, Ashbourne.

In 1881 he is at same address age 31 with  wife and kids (all born Ashbourne)

In 1891 he is at  same  address  age 42 with wife and  kids

In 1901 he is at same  address age 51 with wife and  dau.

Now the  only time I've been  able  to spot him before his marriage is age 6mts living in  Dove  House Green, Ashbourne (1851) but he is listed  on  the top of a page on  his own. so I click  back to see  the previous page  and nothing no family to go with him. The family before his entry are called Spencer  and are underlined after all the family  members.  There  is then half a blank page.....plenty of  room  to add  little  William  if he did belong. My  gut feeling is  something is  awfully  wrong with the census.

Can any of you help me sort him out please.

One clue  to his marriage is that  his wife could be Hannah Derbyshire daughter of Hannah.
Williams daughter was living with her grandmother in  AShbourne  and she was named as Hannah Derbyshire.

I hope some clever little  Angel  can help me  sort them  out.

Thanks Angela.

Hi Anjo
1851
Bit of a long shot
On the census sheets there is a family called Rushton living on Dove House Green

Hannah Rushton head u/m 27  char woman  Staffs Fouton?
Samuel       "       brother u/m 14 brick maker  Staffs Levinscoe?
Rachel         "       sister u/m 9                             "           "
Emma          "       sister u/m 4                             "           "

H0107/ 2146
folio 260
page 16

The names above have been trascribed as Bustton

Looking at the numbering on the sheets they are all over the place, so might not be in the right order. Plus some of the street names have been crossed out and another street name added.

Hi
Just to confirm that the family listed by Ricky is correct and to explain the entry
for William Rushton in 1851 Census.

The page on which William appears is actually a correction page, if you go to the bottom
of this page you will see it states "The above were omitted in Nos79,88,126,210,150,225"
These are actually Schedule Numbers, which appear against the head of each household.
As William Rushton is the first correction you then match him with the first number,
which is Schedule Number 79.

The full reference for Hannah Rushton & her siblings is HO107/2146 Folio 260 Schedule 79
I found them by looking for this schedule number and not by name as Ricky did.

What a wonderful sister looking after and supporting all those children, she obviously
saved them from the workhouse.
Good Luck

Ooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhh thanks guys  now I'm back on  the road ;D

Hannah was born Fenton,  Staffs and brother  and sisters  are  born Swinscoe, staffs.  Great woman for  minding siblings but daft  girl  for  getting pregnant.

Ah  well it might explain why I can't  find a birth  record  for him.  I'll go and look for Hannah on 1841 and see what I can come  up with.

Thanks a million  for the breakthrough you two. I really appreciate  it.

All the best  Angela.

Looking for Swinscoe Staffs in Bartholomew's Gazetteer, it refers you to
Blore with Swinscoe. par. and eccl. dist (B. Ray)  N. Staffs, 3 1/2 miles N. W. of
Ashbourne;

Blore Ray batch numbers on IGI  are:-
Blore Ray
 C066471   1813-1872   E066472
   M066471   1813-1834
   M066472   1668-1812

Thanks Spendlove
I know all that...lots of my family are  from there but no chr  on net for  my Rushtons

I am still really struggling to make  sense of these Rushtons. If anyone would  like to jump  in  and help I would be extremely grateful.

Right in  1861 I have found Samuel Rushton now married to Olive Hand.
I have found Rachel and Emma as servants  in same  household in Mappleton.

But no sign of Hannah or William gggggrrrrr. So  I went through  the  census disc to check  out Dove Gardens as my gut feeling  is William  should be there somewhere.

I found a William  Hewson  age 10 living  with his grandmother in  Dove House  gardens.......could aged granny have  forgot his surname??? I couldn't find this William  on the 1861.  He  had a brother  George  age  5  too.  Now ither  Hannah died or  is prison or    has remarried  and left  the  kids I don't  know.  I  wish I did.

I know I'm  clutching at  straws  but with a lack of info on  the net  I'm  getting  fustrated.

Will see what else  I can  dig up.

Thanks for your help  spendlove

Angela.

Hi Anjo
There is a reference to a marriage in 1856 in Ashbourne
Hannah Rushton
1856
June Quarter
Ashbourne
Derbyshire
vol 7b
page 704a

Only problem is there is no other name on the sheet

Latest update is I have now found this family in Dove HOuse Green, AShbourne

Hannah Derbyshire 41 b.  Fenton Head widow
George  Derbyshire 16 b.  Ashbourne son
Clarah     Derbyshire 6 b.  Ashbourne dau
Hannah Hewson/Howson 67 b.  Swinscoe Mother wid

So Hannah (head of family) must  be William  Rushton's mother  and  married ??? Derbyshire and had George.

Hannah Howson/Hewson is her  mother.

More marriages  to follow up on.
