Hi
have just joined this site - hopefully some of the people in this discussion are still around.

My grt grt grandfather was Samuel RUSHTON, born about 1837 in Swinscoe, STS.  William Rushton was Samuel's father, but I have no siblings for Samuel, nor a mother.

Would be pleased to exchange info that I have.

Rob

Hi Anjo
Thanks for your messages.
This family was giving me headaches too, due to the large number of William Rushtons living in Staffordshire at any one time.
My next plan had been to go to the County Record Office in Stafford and go through the baptisms, marriages and burials for Ellastone, in the hope that it would turn up some clues.
Looks like the Record Offcie for Derbyshire may also be on the itinery.

Samuel was my grt grt grandad.
his son William was my grt grandad

There are Samuels and Williams in each generation it seems....

I'll post the descendents of Samuel privately to you over the weekend.

regards

Rob

I'll look forward to your reply Rob.

I would be interested in anything you find in the recs office in Staffs too as i'm unable to get there. Ellastone records won't help you though.
Its the Ilam parish records and Blore parish records that you need to look at. The Blore records cover Swinscoe and the Ilam records will have records of the earlier Howson/Rushton families. This is basically what I have

John Rushton married Mary Howson 17 Mar 1800 in Ilam, Staffs. On the same day a Mary Howson had a son William Howson chr. I think officially William was a Howson but went by the name Rushton.

16 Oct  1820 William Howson (known as Rushton) married Hannah Harrison in Ilam and had the following children that I know of

Sarah 1826 (don't know where she was born but was living with parents 1841)
Hannah 1829 b. Fenton, Staffs
Ann 1832  (don't know where she was born but was living with parents 1841)
Samuel Harrison Rushton b. 1837 Swinscoe, Staffs
Rachel b. 1842 Swinscoe, Staffs
Emma b. 1847 Swinscoe, Staffs

In 1841 Sarah, Hannah, Ann and Samuel were all living with their mother (father William presumably dead) and called Rushton

In 1851 Mother Hannah b. 1805 was a laundress in a big house leaving her daughter Hannah (b. 1829) in charge of the other siblings

Hannah b. 1829 as well as minding siblings Sam, Rachel and Emma also had her own son William Rushton. (All living in Dove Green, Ashbourne

Hannah b. 1829 had another son George Rushton b. abt 1855

Hannah b. 1829 then married Jonathan Derbyshire 1859 and had several more children with him. On her marriage to Jonathan she was called Howson. (Again I think this was their official name but they went under the name Rushton. Very confusing and very annoying.

My thinking is that dau Hannah b. 1829 knew about the two names her father had and used them both too but her younger siblings thankfully were happy to remain as Rushton. Sister Rachel married as Rachel Rushton. (She married John Brown 25 May 1888 Duffield, Derbyshire)

Hope that helps with your research

Would be nice if the parish records did mention the Alias names or shed some light on to this matter. I'm fairly certain that I have the right family and all dates etc seem to fit.

Look forward to hearing from you again

Anjo

Hi Anjo

Wow, thanks for that long message.
The reason I was going to look at Ellastone in the Record Office is because William, Samuel's son was born at Northwood Calwich in 1861.  I was told by a very old lady in Swinscoe that this is the little row of terraced houses opposite Northwood Farm.  I'd taken this to be part of Ellastone, but there appears to be very few RUSHTON's listed in any databases for Ellastone, so will try the others, as you suggest.
I'm lucky that I live halfway between Ashbourne and Stafford, so research on this shouldn't be too much of a problem.
I'd be willing to do  any look-ups you might have outstanding, within reason, of course.

Lunch break is almost over - got to get back to work!

regards

Rob

Have you checked out the familysearch.org site Rob? there is a chr on there for a william Rushton being chr 15 Dec 1861 in St Peters, Ellastone to parents Samuel Rushton and Olive. Don't know if you know it already or not but Samuel married Olive Hand 1860 St Lukes, Silverdale, Staffs

There is one other child to Samuel and Olive chr in Ellastone and thats Mary Ann Rushton chr 19 Aug 1866. I also  found chr for a

John George Rushton 5 Jul 1863 Stapenhill,

Elizabeth chr 19 Mar 1865 Stapenhill,

Anna chr 30 Dec 1868 died 1 Jun 1869 Stapenhill,

Hannah chr 2 May 1869 Stapenhill

but the records on familysearch.org don't seem to cover the dates needed for Joseph 1873, Frank 1876, Arthur 1878 and Louisa 1881.

Sorry if you already have this info but thought i'd pass it on just incase you haven't got it. I'll be quiet now........well for a while anyway  ;D

Talk to you soon

Angela.

Hi Angela
I had already found all Samuel's kids from later censuses and birth registrations, but it is good when someone else has got the same results through independent research, it reassures me that I haven't overlooked any sources.

Will forward my Rushton line separately by email.  Hopefully you will find something of use to you.

regards

Rob
