Hindley Registers
« on: Monday 20 November 06 21:36 GMT (UK) »
Looking for two lost children:
I have a piece of ageing paper, which indicates that my ancestors Richard Winnard b.1764 and Ann Ainscough, had 11 children born at Hindley, between 1789 and 1811, but without names. I have found 9 of them in the Hindley Parish Registers:
c.13 Sept 1789 (2) Ralph b.24 Aug.
c.22 Apr 1792 (3) James b.30 Mar.
c.1 Feb 1795 (4) William  b. 18 Dec 1794.
c.25 May 1797 (5) Thomas  b.4 May.
c.9 Jun 1799 (1) Betty b.6 May.
c.13 Jun 1802 (2) Phebe b.13 May.
c.25 Nov 1804 (3) Mary b.1 Nov. d.1 Nov 1808
c.21 Jun 1807 (4) Ann b.3 Jun.
c.10 Feb 1811 (5) Alice b.25 Jan.
You will note that the first one I have is the second son, I’ve gone back 3 years prior to the marriage in 1787, but can’t find the first born. There is also 1 other somewhere, either a 6th born son or, a 6th born daughter.
I do realise that they could have been born and died before they had time to be baptised, but I can’t find them in the burials section. There is only 1 there, Mary who died at the age of 4 in 1808.
Is there anyone on this site who has this family in their tree, or has any other ideas.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hello Brian,

I have seen your Message re Winnard.

I have an Elizabeth Winnard born Wigan 1818, she was my ggg grandmother.  According to her marriage certificate in 1838 her father was Richard Winnard.  I have found a birth for an Elizabeth Winnard on the IGI in Wigan 20 Aug1818, christened 2 Nov 1818.  Parents are Richard Winnard and Ann.

I have had Richard Winnard and Ann Ainscough as potential parents for my Elizabeth but wasn't sure.    Do you think she could be one of your missing children?

Hi Jenny,
Many thanks, yes I believe your Elizabeth could be one of the two missing children. I am going to the Records Office later this week and look specifically for Elizabeth. One of the children was a male, as I can only find entries from the second son at the moment
I don't know if you have ever been in touch with Marian Elder, but if not she has a good web page at:

Best Wishes.

Hi again Jenny,
I'm satisfied that Elizabeth is the missing female. Just the firstborn to find now, must be male as Ralph is indicated as 2s. Ralph.
Season's Greetings.
Thanks again.

Hello Brian,

Thanks for your message.  I see you are satisfied that Elizabeth is one of the missing Winnards.  Did you find her in the registers after all?

regards Jenny

Hi Jenny,
Yes, but a transcribed copy, not the original film.
My own line is OK as I am descended from Ralph. I just wanted to complete the "set".
Thanks again.
Season's Greetings.
