Alehouse Recognisance
« on: Tuesday 21 November 06 15:22 GMT (UK) »
I've just come across this phrase in another thread. I'd never heard of it before, but assume it was some sort of early licensing system.
As my ancestors appear to have run half the pubs in Merthyr and the Rhondda at various times in the 19th and early 20th centuries I'd love to know if there are lists available for those areas and what sort of info they would contain.

Scott, Dowdeswell (Merthyr Tydfil), Jones (Loughor and Merthyr Vale), Roberts (Nelson), Prichard (Collenna and Cefn Fforest); Evan Roberts (Corwen and Amlwch); Scott (Pentre); Scott (Ancrum); Thomas (Pantywaun and Bedlinog); Morgan Jones (Ystradfellte); Bowen (Loughor); Jenkins (Bridgend); Thomas Dowdeswell (b. Gloucester, 1829).

Hi Gareth just googled, is this what you're looking for?  I have not heard of the term before, perhaps Glam Records can help

Glamorgan RO in Cardiff has inter alia a) Register of alhouse recognizances 1753-63; b) Recognizance Books, 1779-80; 1801-04; 1810-40, and Rolls 1819-1970 ...

One of my ancestors was on a similar list in the Pembroke area in1827 and 1828. I think they stood surety (like an insurance so that the pub could stay open)

Thanks both.
Cas, I'd tried googling (always my first port of call) but the few answers which came up didn't mention Glamorgan. And when I tried the address you included, it told me the page didn't exist ???
Never mind, I haven't been to the Glam Records Office for a while, so maybe it's time to call in again - with something new to look for.

Hi Gareth googled your title followed by Glamorgan.

The title came up

Not everyone knows this (1)

It was from Gareth Hicks help pages

http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html

There was a long list of stuff, but did not go through it, just posted straight from google

Hi Gareth.
One of my ancestors ran 'The Farrier's Arms' in Pontypridd ~ I was wondering, have you any info on that one, please?

Or has anyone else heard of it??

Thanks :)

Thanks Cas, I don't know why it didn't work before. It contains an interesting piece on the various changes in licensing requirements over the years.

Sorry, Tricia, I don't know the Ponty area well. But you might find this site of general interest:

http://www.welsh-historic-inns.com/pub_history.php

The page Cas included referred to it and it gives a good idea on what life was like running old-time boozers.

My ancestor Richard Vaughan wasn't a licensee but a shoemaker. I think he must have loaned the money as a favour (or perhaps he drank in there a lot)
