Miriam Liley - Clutching at Straws
« on: Tuesday 21 November 06 16:07 GMT (UK) »
I am doing this for a friend and we had thought we had found her Grandmother but we have since found we were following the wrong family  :'(

So now we are trying to follow a line that we thought was rumour in that the family came from Ireland. We know very little about the family but I will tell you what we know.  ;D

Miriam Liley c1881

She was married in Rotherham South Yorkshire in December 1903 to Henry Kendall c1880 born Rotherham South Yorkshire.

Miriam's Father was according to marriage certificate was William Liley, occupation Coal Miner and was down as deceased on the certificate.

I know it is not much information but hoping for a response.  ;)

Christine- if you can find Miriam Liley in 1901 English census it should give birthplace. (Don't think there would have been many coal miners in Ireland but if the family was from Ireland perhaps her father William became a coalminer when he went to England?
If you can't find Miriam's father in 1901 census perhaps the family will be in 1891 census?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Christine-
going back to birth certificate for Miriam Liley b.c1880, who died at 10 months...
what are names of parents? (William and Margaret perhaps?)
might have an idea but it's quite complicated and no point into trying to explain it until I know parents of dead child Miriam

also- did the correct Miriam have a nickname?
names of any of Miriams children?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The names of the parents were not William and Margaret I am afraid they were William Liley and Eliza Liley (formerly Singleton)

Mirriam did not have a nickname as far as I know and Her children were Henry, Minnie, Ivy, and Rose.

We believe she was in the St Johns Ambulance in Todmadon. She was a nurse and nursed people with infecious deceases.

When she married she was living at Melton Terrace West Melton Rotherham Yorkshire.

Christine- did a big more looking last night.

1881 Census has  William Liley/Lilleys in Yorkshire:
*Wm Lilley, age 58, born Dudley, Stafford- at Edwd Pit Cottage, Austhorpe, York. Living with married daughter- think he's also father of William w/ wife Margaret.

*William Liley, 32, born Liversedge, York- at Hightown, Liversedge, York (wife Catherine). Children born Dewsbury dist. (like 'wrong' Miriam).

*Wm Lilley, 32, b.Stafford- at 73 Milton St., Greasbrough, York (wife Margaret). Their 1st 2 children born at Dudley, Staffs, younger 3 born Rotherham, Yorks.

1901 Census:
there's a Wm. Lilley, 55, born Dudley. Staffs, coal hewer, listed at Rotherham, Yorks.

Rawmarsh, Yorks WR:
*John W. Lilley, 26, coal trammer below ground, b.Rotherham (think he's son of William & Margaret).
*Eliza Lilley, 43, born Rotherham....

Also a Mary Lilley born Sept. quarter in Rotherham.

Now, if you can follow any of that...
Miriam Liley's father William was supposed to be a coal miner and she got married in Rotherham, Yorkshire. If her age is an estimate from marriage certificate...could she have made herself a bit older? and if proof was needed- used 'wrong' Miriam's birthdate?
Another possiblity...birth name wasn't Miriam but something similar like Mary, Minnie, Mary Ann, etc.
