Hi Monica

I was going to suggest that a sight of Helen's death cert would test our theory just that bit more. Just in case there were two Helen Jack. I'll go and have alook now  ;)

From the death cert, Helen's parents were :

John Jack, coal miner deceased and Janet Beveridge, deceased. Informant was Peter Rae.

I think we rest our case!

A further point.

This concerns Peter's confusion over his place of birth. Here is a parish map of Stirlingshire. You will see that Polmont and Muiravonside are at the extreme right (East) putting them between Falkirk to the West and Linlithgow (West Lothian) to the East:

Yes I see that on the map, thanks. It seems strange though that he gave so many different places of birth! Would have thought that all the Censuses would have had same answer.

Where people said they are born on censuses is a law unto itself. Some are consistent but many give the first place they remember as a child.  Others  said where they last lived and yet others varied their birthplace from census to census, as Peter did. The places that he gave were all very close together and he probably fogot what he'd put down/told the enumerator 10 years before.

Hi,

Just looking at the messages I received and one thing puzzles me. Gadget wrote: Three male Rae baptisms in 1800-1805 being:

Alexander, s/o Andrew Rae & Agnes Aitken
Thomas Livingstone s/o James Rae & Eliz. Anderson
James, s/o Livingstone Rae & Alison Johnstone.

It was the naming conventions that puzzle me because of the Livingstone name being in two of the listings. They would appear to be relatives themselves! See what I mean?

I think I mentioned that - it does look worth following up - maybe you could have a look on the IGI for Polmont. Batch numbers are here:

I Also meant to add posted bu Gadget
"
"If it's any help, there are three male Rae baptisms in the 1800-1805 period in Polmont. All 1803 though.

27 March 1803, Alexander, s/o Andrew Rae and Agnes Aitken
11 August 1803 Thomas Livingstone, s/o James Rae and Elizabeth Anderson
11 December 1803, James, s/o Livingston Rae and Alison Johnstone"

I am related to all 3 fathers.  James & Andrew were brothers and Livingston was their 1st cousin.
