Looking for more Blain children
« on: Friday 24 November 06 08:04 GMT (UK) »
I found this couple on familysearch (IGI): John Blain and Helen Hannay.

They have a child, Letitia Morison Blain chr 9 Oct 1806 Old Luce Wigtown.

Can anyone find any other children born to this couple?

Thanks.

Sadly the 1804 extract for Robert looks like a different mother:

ROBERT BLAIN     Christening:  06 MAY 1804   Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
Parents: Father: JOHN BLAIN    Mother: HELEN STEWART

There are a number of entries for this couple, mostly in Penninghame.

Thanks Monica. I did see John Blain and Helen Stewart in Penninghame with their brood.

This query is sparked by my search for the parents of Margaret Lamont (maiden name Blain) born c 1811, Glenluce. She appears to have a sister Letitia born c 1808, Glenluce.

I found this Letitia with parents John Blain and Helen Hannay and wondered if these may also be the parents of Margaret. But perhaps there are other Letitia Blains, though it seems to be a fairly unusual name.

Letitia's entry in Old Luce certainly looks possible, given they also called one of their daughters by that name. It doesn't help that they don't seem to have followed Scottish naming patterns closely. It's a pity she's the only child showing for this couple both on SP and IGI.

Thanks for the reply Monica. Yes it's got to be a distinct possiblilty that this is the same Letitia who is the sister of Margaret.

I have not yet found any Helen's in the family who may be named after the mother which is strange. There is a John a generation or two down.

Letitia was supposedly unmarried and aged 43 in the 1851 census living with her sister and brother in law. I could not find a death for a Letitia Blain. Perhaps she was widowed rather than unmarried though, because in the same census William Lamont's mother is said to be unmarried and goes by her maiden name Pollock rather than Lamont.

A bit of a puzzle ....

Thanks for reviving this very old thread Brigid.

I’m afraid I don’t have any instances of this family ever using McBlain or “Mc” variants at any time.

It’s been a number of years, but I don’t recall ever searching for them with Mc.
