William Lamont's mother is said to be unmarried and goes by her maiden name Pollock rather than Lamont.

A bit of a puzzle ....

Ruskie, it wasn't uncommon for widows to revert to their maiden name but it's also quite possible William was illegitimate.

I've seen many instances of illegitimate children being brought up by their father's surname or their reputed father's surname

I found this couple on familysearch (IGI): John Blain and Helen Hannay.

They have a child, Letitia Morison Blain chr 9 Oct 1806 Old Luce Wigtown.

Ruskie,

Have you seen the image to confirm they were married?

My BLAIN s. Were originally from wigton too

Looking for McBLAIN pre 1840 may be useful
And for births to single mothers

I came across a BLEANE spelling to .

Do you have a tree on ancestry .

I don't know who is the father of my Peter Blane 1770 for sure but as he has a daughter called Anabel I thought the one with s wife called Anabel was a good bet .

Names can be useful .
I.ll add the link to my topic .in case we do merge at top...maybe you will spot a family resemblance with the photo of my BLAINE. Girls on last page .of ..

William and Margaret Lamont on 1871 census with  daughter Elizabeth and 4 grand children .he is a forester

A few trees on ancestry give Margaret'as b 1915 close to census age with sister and daughter called Letitia
parents given William Blane and Janet kilpatrick no sources ..
but some also say she was born glenluce Australia

BLAIN - BLAINE - BLANE - BLAINEY - BLAINIE - BLAINNIE - MACBLAINE - MACBLANE - MCBLAINE - MCBLANE etc.  ;D

Hi Annie, this is an old thread from 2006, so between then and now I’ve learned a bit more. This thread might even predate my SP account.  ;D

It has been some years since I looked at this branch so am very rusty.

I may not even have looked for a Blain/Hannay marriage on SP - I’ll look through my past SP searches to see if I have anything on this family.

Sorry Brigid, no resemblance at all between my OH and these girls. The earliest person from this family we have a photo of was taken in his WW1 uniform and there is no family resemblance between him and these girls either. I’m not sure I would be looking for any family resemblance from that long ago anyway.

The surname is Blain from as early as 1809ish, but yes, worth considering McBlain. Ihave found them as Blane in one record. Thanks Annie for additional alternative suggestions.

Brigid, that tree saying Glenluce Australia is obviously wrong.  ;) The Margaret b 1918 1915 is too late for my family I’m afraid so she might be a different branch which I haven’t chased up …. but my Margaret and William do have a daur Letitia. As far as I can recall, I have the relevant family on each census.  :)

Ruskie I thought the 1851 census with the 2 Letitia's was definitely your people
By the way was sister Letitia a Pollock or a sister in law BLAIN

The tree said b 1915 which is not far off age taking into account rounding downs of ages
And the Glenluce ..mistake can be from ancestry s predictive system .

Looks like They may actually  have followec the naming system
Daughter Janie is named after Janet POLLOCK

And there were 2 earlier children .
Sorry was looking in the night so haven't jotted all information down .

I'm the same reviving old threads and finding new recourses the poor law applications now on ancestry give an incredible amount of information .

There were a lot of HANNAY and HANNAY. + BLAIN  Families in Maybole Ayrshire in 1840

http://www.ayrshireroots.co.uk/Towns/Maybole/Maybole%201841%20Census%201.htm

I bet you regret commenting on the BLAIN  name now ... Lots of extra work 🙂

See attached, from the deaths index on SP.

No corresponding Bl*ne* orM*cBl*n* deaths.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
