information about Lewis's of manchester
« on: Friday 24 November 06 14:16 GMT (UK) »
My husband's grandfather worked for Lewis's as a Commissionaire after leaving the Army. We have a lovely gold  watch complete with sovereign on gold chain which was presented to him ,either on retirement or for long service by Eliot Lewis & Herbert D. Cohen in February 1913. His name was Frederick Parish.

Are there any records or photographs kept of past employees?  if so where would be the best place to search for same?

Hi Betty P

With the manchester shop closing a few years ago, the only thing you could try would be contacting Lewis's head office. Try this link

I don't think this link will be of any use - Lewis's of Manchester was not part of the John Lewis group (very confusingly!).  They were part of Owen Owen, which was also in Chester and, I think, Liverpool.  Sorry I don't know where you can search however.

I think the watch and sovereign is a lovely story - nice piece of history

I didn't know that either Sallysmum!

Betty P, this link might help, seems that bits have been sold of and purchased but at least it shows the chain.
