Hi fudgecake,
just a note to ask if you have looked for Thomas in further censuses- his age is a bit 'iffy' in 1851 I'd say (20 yrs different) and 1871 has him born Kildare, Ireland.

However checking with Griffiths Valuation ( around 1850s survey in Ireland) there are no Avis families shown. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php
Family search has just a few for Ireland.
As there are Avis' in East Anglia, I wonder if he was born to a soldier's wife?
best wishes

It's a strange entry because Ireland was part of Britain then so everyone born in Ireland was technically a British subject.  I've seen it added after people born in eg. France and USA, but never Ireland before.

that is an interesting thought Haywood

I also had looked and found no Avis in Kildare or any or Ireland come to that.

There are plent of Avis in and arround the Rattlesden area of Suffolk where he is living...i had wondered if his family were in fact English and he has just been born in Ireland...unfortunatly I have no idea how to try and find this out lol

thanks for yor help
