Well, blow me down, but I think you have found him.  If not, then he is at least a good candidate.  This particular fellow listed on Kevin Asplin's site as a private in the 8th Company, 4th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry must be the following George Edward Askew:

FreeBDMD: Births Jun 1878 - Askew  George Edward - Derby  7b 540

1881 Census: 16 Crosby St, Derby St Werburgh DBY Ref. RG11/3397/9/11/53:
George ASKEW   Head   M   M   37   Railway Signal Fitter   DBY Brackenfield
Clara ASKEW   Wife   M   F   37      LEI Kegworth
Elizabeth Ann ASKEW   Dau      F   7   Scholar   Derby
Catherine Jane ASKEW   Dau      F   6   Scholar   Derby
Clara Eva ASKEW   Dau      F   4   Scholar   Derby
George Edward ASKEW   Son      M   2      Derby

1891 Census: 72 Liversage St, Derby St Peter DBY Ref. RG12/2727/84/20/:
George ASKEW   Head   M   M   47   Grocer   DBY Brackenfield
Clara ASKEW   Wife   M   F   47   Milliner & Dresmaker   LEI Kegworth
Elizabeth A. ASKEW   Dau      F   17   Milliner & Dressmaker   Derby
Clara E. ASKEW   Dau      F   14      Derby
George E. ASKEW   Son      M   12   Scholar   Derby

Then, in the 1901 Census he is definitely not with his parents, and I don't see him elsewhere in England either:

1901 Census: 38 Wilmot St, Derby St Peter DBY Ref. RG13/3213/73/21/134:
George ASKEW   Head   M   M   57   Jobbing Gardener   DBY Brockenfield
Clara ASKEW   Wife   M   F   57   Dressmaker   LEI Kegworth
Catherine J. ASKEW   Dau   S   F   26   Dressmaker   DBY Derby
Clara E. ASKEW   Dau   S   F   24   Dressmaker   DBY Derby
Henry B. TISSINGTON   Board   S   M   21   Railway Clerk   DBY Derby

It looks to me a very good chance that he's the fellow in the picture, which I think must have been taken around the turn of the century.  I will contact the owner of the photograph to ask if I may post an image of it here.

Regards and best wishes, Brett

I thought you might like to have a look at the photos which are at the centre of my research ... not much to go on, I know, but we may yet be successful!

Here is the full mounted photograph, unfortunately with the corner ripped off (or, as Spike Milligan might say, "ruefully chipped").

... and another enlargement, this time of the inscription on the reverse.  This particular photographer used the same convention for many years: first the negative number, often followed by a letter, perhaps indicating which of several copies made, and then the surname of the client.  It is not, as some might think, the service or regimental number of the soldier.

Hope you enjoy them. Regards and best wishes, Brett

Hi Brett
Thanks for the photos. It all sems to add up that he is George Askew. I suppose the clincher would be if someone could identify the uniform as belonging to the Derbyshire Imperial Yeomanry.

We should put a message on Rootschat for anyone researching Askew.

How come a Kiwi has a web page on Derbyshire photographers!! ;D

Yes, it does seem to click together very nicely, doesn't it.  I was hoping that the uniform might help, but I don't see any badges or insignia evident, so I'm not too hopeful.

Well, most of my father's ancestors were from South Derbyshire, right back to at least the late 1600s, and the Photographers web site is an extension of the index that I originally created, for for myself, and later to help others, date old family photographs.  As usual, I got a little sidetracked. ;)

Regards and best wishes, Brett

I have found a web site http://hometown.aol.co.uk/kevinasplin/IVA.html which gives lists of soldiers shipped to the Boer War.

Does anyone know if this site is no longer available?  Or is it just my computer?  It takes a while to try and access, then just says "Done" but nothing comes up?

I also have a Derbyshire man, Walter Golding, missing from the 1901 census and family stories say he was in the Boer War.

All help gratefully received,   :D
