Help With Finding Vital Statistics Records on Ancestry.com

Hello,

I hope someone can help. I am using Ancestry.com for the first time looking for vital statistic records. What is the best way to go about finding records? So far the records I have searched for gave me "no results" messages when I am sure of exact dates. For example: John Winterton married  October 13, 1944, Birkenhead, Cheshire or Odette Jones b. Apri 28, 1923, Birkenhead, Cheshire. Can SKP find these records please and instruct me step by step how it was done? Thanks for any help.

Hi Lynnwin,

You can't do an automatic search for these records - you have to view the index for the quarter in which the event happened.


Go here:
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

and choose Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983

Choose births
Enter Odette Jones June quarter 1923 and view the page
You'll find Jones, Odette O - mother's maiden name Rickaby - Birkenhead 8a 842.

I can't see John Winterton marriage that you mention however

Just to add - the other BDM records on Ancestry are a copy of FreeBDM - a searchable index being created by volunteers.

If you go to the actual freebdm site
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

select Information  then Coverage Charts  then  births deaths OR marriages - you will see graphs of what has been completed. At the minute there is a large percentage complete 1837-about 1910/1915 - any later than that and you need to use the option described by Tanja

Did you find the entry from an image page with a list of names on it then?

I am having trouble with the link you gave. I get an image page but I am not finding the entry for Odette Jones.
