Wilcoxon and Duncan married 1848, Edinburgh
« on: Saturday 25 November 06 12:01 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage of Thomas Wilcoxon to Catherine Duncan on Nov 6 1848.
He was a waiter and lived at 48 North Bridge Street , St Andrews Parish, she was at the same adress, daughter of Samuel Duncan a deceased gardener.
Is there any record of where they were before and after the marriage, It`s a unusual name and most of my Wilcoxons were in Cheshire, it`s a mystery why TW was there.

Thanks

Hello Wilcoxon,

(1) The IGI section of familysearch.org has the marriage on 21 Nov 1848 in Edinburgh.

(2) If you use the free surname search on the homepage of scotlandspeople (SP) then you will see that there is only one record of a Wilcoxon in Scotland over the period 1513-1955. That record is an OPR banns and marriages one for the period 1553-1854.
This record is for Wilcoxon, again for the 21 Nov 1848.
Although there are no other SP records for your specific spelling of Wilcoxon they could well be lurking under a variant name.

(3) You probably already know, or will have heard of, the British actor called Henry Wilcoxon (1905-1985) who was in Hollywood from the early 1930s. He ended up as an executive for Cecil B. de Mille. I thought I would just mention it in the passing.

Hope this helps

Thanks, perhaps they moved away from Scotland as Thomas was probably not from there to begin with.

As for Henry, he and I are descended from Arthur Wilcoxon and Hannah Gamon who married in 1744, One brother out of a family of 11 , moved to London and my ancestor stayed in Cheshire. It was the London Line that Henry , real name Harry Frederick came from.

The spelling variation Wilcockson gives the following results on ScotlandsPeople.

Births (1855 - 1905) 1 (male, west of Scotland, 1890)
Marriages (1855 - 1930) 2 (the same 1920 event indexed twice, bride had 2 surnames listed; Edinburgh, St Andrew district)
Deaths (1855 - 1955) 2 (both female, 1886 and 1895, both west of Scotland)

There are no results in any of the Scottish censuses of 1841 to 1901 for Wilcoxon or Wilcockson (or either with 2 L's).

Hi Wilcoxon -
I've just had a look at one of your postings about a Thomas Wilcoxon and his wife Catherine-(I am a little confused over all the Thomas Wilcoxons!!).

I had a look at the Scottish census for 1841 and 1851 and found this record for 1851-

Thomas Willcoxen  Head Age 27 Born ab 1824 London
Catherine Willcoxen Spouse Age 21 Born ab 1830 Edinburgh Midlothian
Maria Willcoxen Daughter Age 1 Born ab 1850 Edinburgh Midlothian
Occupation Waiter(tavern)
Address South Bridge Street 44
County Midlothian
Town Edinburgh
Civil Parish Edinburgh Lady Yester
Parish Number 685/1

I couldn't see him on the 1841 - the only one I could find in Scotland was for
Isabella Willcoxson Age 25 Born Scotland
Living in Princes Street Rothesay Bute
Governess to a family called Stirling.

Also
On the 1861
Catherine Wilcoxson Age 28 Born ab 1833
Born Edinburgh
Housemaid
Address Possil House
Civil Parish Maryhill
Registration District Maryhill
County Lanarkshire
Head of House is Archd Alison b England 1793(wife Elizabeth b Scotland)

Hope this is the right Thomas-apologies if you already have this information

Regards

Hi again-

On the 1881 Scotland
Catherine Wilcoxson Age 50 Born ab 1831
Born Edinburgh
Registration District St Giles
Civil Parish Edinburgh High Church
County Midlothian
Address 1,3,5+17 Cockburn Street St Philip's Hotel

Catherine is also on the 1891 if you would like the information. There are also a few 'Wilcocksons' from England on the 1891 Scotland census.

Thanks for this, I didn`t know about this , even though this Thomas is still `unknown` it has eliminated another TW born about the same time in Cheshire which I`m still looking for .
I have a feeling thatthis one could be from Arthur that moved to London, but being so  early it`s hard to find baptisms.
I wonder if TW died, was Catherine a widow ??, and it looks as if Maria died as well.
You`re right about so many TW`s , being confusing.
My own ancestor was also TW b 1824, illeg son of TW b 1803 who`s father was also TW.
TW b 1803  married and had another son born 1829 and guess what he called him, TW.
Then my TW b 1824 married and from them on there was a TW in every generation up to 1900. ???
Catherine in 1891 would be nice. I think Wilcocksons that late will probably be from Derbyshire, they tended to use that spelling, where as Cheshire used the X.
