Searching 1837 online (findmypast)
« on: Sunday 26 November 06 14:05 GMT (UK) »
Slightly confused with their search engine - for example, I entered the forename JAS and the surname CHARLEWOOD - specifically searching for his birth in 1846. So it gives me 12 results under Births, 7 pages of which are British Overseas - great I think he was born in Ireland this will be him. But he isn't on there - plenty of results for other Charlewoods, but it doesn't seem to have taken any account of the forename - this is vital as you need to pay 3 credits to see each page, without knowing what is on there first.

MacDonald - Glasgow, Lanark

Their "search engine" in fact only looks at the surnames at first and last position on the page.  They are are not indexed by forename.  So ,yes, you have to trawl through the pages to see if he is there, expending credits all the while.  Don't go for the overseas births unless you have reason to believe he was born overseas.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

If you are looking for England/Wales only, you can search 1837-1983 for no charge

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

There will usually only be one page per quarter, unless your given name Jas has multiple entries that go over a page end. You may also want to search for James as this is the likely name for the abbreviation Jas.

FreeBDM - a copy of which is on the ancestry link or
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

is almost complete for 1846, so you may get a direct find.

Back again.
The street address  for census was 15, Asproelle Close. and Jes and oldest Son Arthur occupation  was Printer Compositor.
Considering there ocupation I wonder If the following Charlewood has any bearing? John Charlewood from about1560 to about 1593printed many books including a collection of Sir Francis Drake publications in 1581.
        Regards   Reg.

Thanks for the info Reg - I had most of this already, but a couple of interesting things I didn't know.

I knew that Jas remarried Mary (his first wife was Ellen), but didn't know Mary had a son by another marriage.

Also thanks for the interesting fact about the 16th century printer. Would be great to think that one day I will get back that far and make the link!

The address I already had is 15 Ashville Avenue.
