Hi Curtiss

I know a little of how you feel, I had a similar line in my family but I did eventually find them and lots more, so take heart  :)

One thing that might help us to help you is if you could give some approximate dates. For example, roughly when was your grt grandmother born.

I know it is a headache

I think she was born around 1835

She married Thomas in 1854ish in Teesdale they had two children and he died in 1857

She then remarried in 1858 to Robert Mitchel in Northumberland then moved to Kyo Durham

My grandmother remembers she was called MacFadgen but could not remember her first name so i thought she might of changed her first name when she left Scotland but still cant find her Maiden name, so think that thought was out the window.

Kind Regards

Curtiss :)

I can't immediately see anyone that fits  :(

Do you have the names in birth order of her children?

Is there any indication on any of the censuses where she was born?

Hi Curtiss and Gadget

Showing on Freebmd:

Marriages Jun 1858
Mitchel Robert    @ Glendale  Vol. 10b    Page 485
with a possible corresponding bride: Rogers Charlotte

and,

Marriages Mar 1852
MacFadgen Charlotte @ Teesdale    Vol. 10a   Page 179
Rogers    Thomas         Teesdale    10a   179

Have you seen these by chance? I wondered whether Charlotte's father's name was given.

Regards.

Hi Curtiss

I've just found them in South Shields on the 1861. Charlotte is aged 27 and born Scotland. Robert was born Northumberland.

Thanks for all your help

I wonder if this could be her in Scotland 1841:

1841   MCFADGEN CHARLOTTE age 8 @ ST CUTHBERT'S EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN    GROS Ref: 685/02 243/02 001

Age would fit. She is the only entry that would fit! I searched for Char* M*cFa* and leaving aside all the McFarlane (!) entries, there are only two McFadgens, one age 30 in Dumbarton and this entry. I'll go and try and find more detail.

Charlotte's children:

From the 1861:
Thomas Rogers, b.c. 1855
Elizabeth Rogers, b.c. 1857
John Mitchell, b. 1859

From the 1871:

Ellen Mitchell, b.c. 1863
Jessie Mitchell,, b.c.1865
Joseph Mitchell,, b.c. 1868
Charlotte Mitchell,, b. 1870

Not sure if there's any naming pattern there Monica.

I think getting one of the marriage certificates might be your best bet, Curtiss. This should show Charlotte's father's name.

PS You can get the certificates on line:

I'll have a look at the 1841, Monica  ;)
