Hello Gardner.

I have used all variations of the name, but he doesn't appear
on the 1871 index.

I would imagine you have him on 1901 census already....
But just in case you haven't....here goes

THOMAS WOLLOXTON 77 born London Middlesex.retired
                                                              Hairdresser

William Yancy               56        head             Hairdresser

17 Breckfield Road Everton
RG13/3485
West Derby
South Everton
ED institution or vessel 45
Vol 201
page 42
schedule number 283

PS He was classed as a boarder.

Best wishes
JeannieR

Thanks a lot for that. I didn't have him in the 1901 actually so that is good to have. And another spelling variation to bear in mind! ;D

1871 RG10 3787 folio 48 page 11
21 Houghton Street Liverpool

Thomas Woolloxall head age 45 unm hairdresser (employing 3 men 2 boys and 1 servant) LND Middlesex
Mary Jones age 21 servant unm domestic servant Hawarden Wales
Walter Gross age 17 servant unm  assistant to hairdresser Lpool
William Yancy age 26 servant unm journeyman to hairdresser Lpool

He married quite late

Mary Crookham and Thomas Wolloxall married 1873 Liverpool 8b 84

Mary Walloxhall died mar qtr 1888 liverpool 8b 127

Cannot find any trace of him in 1891 though he must be completely mis-spelt. Tried looking under just Thomas age 65/66 but there are thousands of them.

So it looks like he ends up living with his trainee William Yancy by 1901
Just had a thought and looked for william in 1891 and he turns up living at 21 Houghton Street with his mother Augusta. he is a barber and listed as head of household and she is living on own means no servants and no Thomas. Maybe he was visiting someone or even abroad.

Incidentally in 1901 Thomas is listed as Wolloxall not Wolloxton.

Hope this helps
Donna
