medal card for Clarence Henry Stephens - need help in decoding/understandin
« on: Thursday 30 November 06 12:51 GMT (UK) »
I ordered the attached medal roll card from the national archives and after reading the abbrev and codes I still can not make any sense of it - Im not sure if this is the person Im looking for as all I know is his name and there is nothing on the census - I do not know his age or place he was born as my mother (his grt granddaughter) said her dad did not speak of him and he had a "reputation" of being a jack the lad - so I am completely lost - If there is a medal roll card then will there be any other info on him that will give me more info (like his family) to connect him?

If I was you, rather than chase army records that may or may not be him (expensive too for army records as I found out), I would work from resources you know will definitely be him, ie; your grandads birth certificate, then from there, his parents (Clarence + bride) marriage certificate, which should give you Clarence's fathers name and occupation. The medal cards, as far as I am aware, only give limited info, ie; army number, regiment, date of joining/discharge, medals awarded, etc, no personal family details......

Good Luck

Hi Jlbriggs

Welcome to Rootschat

I'm going to move your post over to the armed forces board and hope that somebody may be able to help you with the medal card :)

In the meantime, do post some further details of the family ie. grandparents etc. as mentioned by Catherine.  Although STEPHENS is a relatively common surname, Clarence isn't so common so somebody might be able to help you find something if we have some further details of his known children (names/dates/birthplaces) and wife etc..

Best wishes

Casalguidi

Can you give us all the details from your grandfathers marriage certificate? ie; date, your grandfathers full name/age, residence at time of marriage, and his fathers occupation, witnesses, any little bit of info helps  :)

Regards
Catherine

Hi
The card you have posted is the Silver War Badge index card.It says your soldier join the Army on 28 Sept 1915, in  the (Kings) Liverpool Regiment, with the Army number of 5256 this may be a Territorial Force number. He did not go overseas until after 1st Jan 1916, as he only as two medals the British war Medal & Victory Medal. at some point he was moved to the 14th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment, you can tell this from his new army number 266454, the 14th numbers are 265001-290000. This unit did not go overseas, on the 1 Jan 1917 it became the 14th Batt at Hemsby, Norfolk, at the end of 1917 it moved to Palling on the Norfolk coast east of Stalham & was there at the end of the War.

He was Discharge out of the Army as 'No longer physically fit for War service' (Kings Regulations Para 392 xvi ) on the 30th Jan 1919.

If this soldier is your man he may have put in for a War pension. If he did you may have a better chance of finding him at the 'NA' at Kew. best of luck

HI Jlbriggs.
If you are still in trouble, you could try sending a letter to :-
Army Personnel Centre,
Historical Disclosures,
Mail Point 400,
Kentigern House,65 brown Street. Glasgow,
G2 8EX.       This address should be used for family members wishing to access records of deceased soldiers, try to send all the relevent information you have,Rank Fullname and DOB,Regiment or Corp,to assist in locating the correct record.
 Good luck.      Regards   Reg.

Hi all
All records for soldiers up till 1921 are at the National Archives & not the Army Personnel Centre, at Glasgow.
