**COMPLETED** Another "Fines" mess: Sheffield Parish Records needed
« on: Friday 01 December 06 11:30 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for

Thomas (b c1827 Ireland) and Sarah (b c1836 Nottingham) FINES

They have two daughters Catherine (bc1859 Sheffield) and Mary (b c1856 Sheffield)

found in Kendal in 1881 & 1871, and in Bradford in 1861 now trying to follow back.

I cannot find record of their marriage or of births of daughters. (only a Sarah on bmd - dont think she is ours, but will be checking if nothing else turns up)

Has anyone got access to Sheffield parish registers that could look for me?
They may well be Catholics as Thomas was from Ireland.

thanks
nuff

Hi Nuff,

There is a marriage  entry on Freebmd for a Thomas Foynes and Sarah Manyon - Sheffield Sept Quarter 1854 Vol 9c Page 397. Couldn't trace anyone with that name in the 61 census - I know it's a long shot but you never know! Could be a phonetic spelling of the surname Fines, when pronounced in Irish!

Thanks Karen,

It certainly looks worth a try.

I'm still interested if anyone has the parish records ;)

Well Karen,  you inspired me to look again at freebmd. I must admit it was a while ago that I had last checked it out and maybe I overlooked these entries or maybe they have been added since. I also have a better idea on ages from census and marriage cert of Catherine, plus I now have Mary's name. Anyway the end result is that I have found these

Births Jun 1857
Fiennes  Catherine     Sheffield  9c 314

Births Sep 1855
Foynes  Mary     Sheffield  9c 245

which added to the Foynes you found (try saying that aloud)
makes me quite hopeful

thanks again
nuff.

Have you had a look at Sheffield Indexers site. They have Baptisms, Marriage and Cemetery records, also 1841 census. Not complete as yet, but a good site to search.

thanks - have just given it a go. It shows one of the three found on freebmd - but not the two that I was going to order - so I will have to fill out the form manually.
Looks as though it will be a useful site once more complete but fuzzy searching is very limited. I have bookmarked it for future use :)

The 19th century Sheffield Fines or Foynes were a family of Irish, and I believe County Galway, origin. They were uneducated working class folk, but very interestingly the name is almost certainly of 12th century French origin (La Rochelle area), and derived from "FYAN" (in French FAYAN or FAYANT). Fascinatingly, many of these others were quite wealthy and educated. Among spellings used we have FINES, FYNES, FOYNES, and FYANS. I certainly have some notes about the Sheffield Fines somewhere, and I THINK one or two birth certificates. If you can answer this I'll dig the info out.
You will be, I think, very distantly related to me, maybe an 8th cousin.
A uniquely rare genealogical book tells us that in 1655 an O'Fynes family were expelled from County Limerick to the Galway or nearby area.
Beware of some websites which have got it all wrong--also of red herring of Fines families who weren't Irish.
