Hazel,
Any chance of a zoom in on the medal he's wearing as well?

Hi neil,

Its a scan of a photo that a relative sent me, it's quite bad on the detail, and alas, the medal is virtually blank on this pic - but here it is!

I did try to have a fiddle in photoshop with the contrast/levels etc but there's nothing there.

Cheers

Casalguidi,

Good advice, thank you! Next time I'm in Woolwich area I'll see if I can have a look at the registers. Hopefully he'll have been in the army in 1918...

Thanks for continuing to help, guys, it's really wonderful to be learning more about my family.

Hi Hazel & Harribobs,

Re that medal, I agree it's not the Queens South Africa medal (looks all wrong - ribbon, suspender, clasp etc)

You did say Hazel that he served in NW Frontier of India before WW1. The period either side of WW1 in India was covered by the India General Service (IGS) medal 1908-36. Before that was the IGS 1895-1902.

This is the IGS 1908, which is the one I'd guess at here.

Yes, I'm pretty sure he was in India previous to WW1. Thanks for the link Neil.

You've all been very helpful and its much appreciated.
