Can anyone shed further light on William Steven BUTLER b. abt 1815 Rayleigh, Essex.

Trying to find his parents and any siblings.

He qualified from the Royal Collegue of Surgeons in 1841 and almost immediately departed for New Zealand on the ship Arab, employed by the New Zealand Company as Ship surgeon.

He returned to UK sometime between 1848 and 1851 and is on the 1851 census living in Fryning and 1861 in Igatestone, just prior to his death in 1864.

Thanks
Adrian

Adrian,

I can't help on his family but you might find records about him from The Royal College of Sugeons; they will have archives.

www.rcseng.ac.uk

I'll declare an interest; one of my sons is a surgeon!

Thanks Jan,

Unfortunatly I have already been in contact and in this time period, unless they became Fellows  (FRCS) detailed records were not kept. All they have on record is that he took his exams there and passed them in 1841, giving his address as New Zealand.

Thanks CP

had not found the other William Butler.

I think that looks quite promissing. Not being born Essex would fit as Cornelius was born in Berkshire and if he is the brother of William, then likely he was also born near.

Elizabeth/Eliza J - Williams middle name was Stevens, so maybe her maiden name.  William also married in NZ and his first daughter was named Elizabeth..

I have the archives in London doing a search for the birth cert of William S, so hopefully they can find it.

lots of inters jigsaw pieces, hopefully I came make the picture.
