Help with christian name please

I have been looking at parish registers and one name appears as   

Jno

where the o is superscript in the same way that - Tho is abreviation of thomas.

Is this and abbreviation for John ??

Yes, you are right.

Although why they leave out just one letter & reorganise the others is still a mystery to me!

Yes it is an abbreviation for John. Have seen it several times in documents for my family. 

Why? I have no idea since it isn't much of an abbreviation.

I think you will find it is a hang over from the time when the names were all written  in Latin and Jno was short for Johannes.
