Hughes Family in Aberdare
« on: Friday 01 December 06 22:45 GMT (UK) »
I am completely stuck!!!!!!  I have a family in the 1861 census and cannot find any trace of them in the 1851 census.
            *********************
Thomas Hughes, 42, fireman, b Carmarthenshire, Pembrey
Sarah Hughes, 33, b Glamorgan, looks like Lantwit
Harriet Hughes 15, b Glamorgan, Baglan
Ann Hughes, 11, b Glamorgan, Margam
Elizabeth Hughes, 9, b Glamorgan, Margam
Sarah Hughes, 3, b Glamorgan, Aberdare
               *****************
I would like to find:
   1) the 1851 census page for this family,
2)a marriage record for Thomas and Sarah (about 1846)
3)a birth record for any or all the girls, especially Elizabeth, my
        great grandmother

I have had no luck searching Ancestry.com or the IGI index, so any
help will be very much appreciated.

Thank you, Cardiff!!!  Since I am new to Welsh family history, could you tell me where I might write for a copy of the marriage record?  I am familiar with the BMD and I did, by process of elimination, think that Sarah Meredith might be the one I am looking for.  Could I obtain a copy of a record similar to the OPRs in Scotland and England?

You asked where I got the birthplaces......they were taken from the 1861 census page for this family.  I have nothing else to go on.  You gave me the address to write to for a birth certificate.....and that most certainly is worth a try.

Could I also request certificates for the other girls....based on the 1861 information?

Thank you so very much for your help,
Barbara

Hi
Don't request other girls certificate until you have Elizabeths. If that is the correct birth date certificate it will confirm both parents names and her mothers maiden name. This will give you the correct info on the parents info.
The cost of the certificate is £7 pounds make out to suprintendent Registra also enclose a stamped addressed envelope
Reg office Neath Port Talbot
Pearl Assurance House, London Road, Neath West Glamorgan SA11 1H1.

What do you mean a copy -- if you go to FreeBMD and next to the name they show info with glasses click on this and the next page click on show copy open file and this will show you the Regstration sheet.  Is this what you mean?
what does OPRs stand for? Registration is the St Catherines index. Sorry to be vague not sure what you mean
hope this helps
cheers cardiff

Thank you for the warning not to go overboard with the birth certificates!!!!  I need to look at the reg office to see if they will accept a credit card.  There is no way I can send a self-addressed envelope because I don't have access to Welsh stamps!!!   I live in California.

OPRs is the abbreviation for Old Parish Registers.  If one finds a relative in the index (Scotland and most of England) one can usually order a photo copy of the original written entry into the parish registers.  Usually, when opening the BMD entry, you find a long list of names.....similar to what is found on 1837 Online or Ancestry.com.  You see the name, the term, and the place......but you don't see the original entry in the parish records.  What you see is the listing of all Elizabeth Hughes, for example, that were born in the three month period you are looking at.  There is no reference to the names of the parents, etc.

In Scotland, the wonderful volunteers in the local Family History Society will find and make a phtotcopy of the original entry......they find it on their microfiche or film sources.   Of course, you must be a member to avail yourself of this service and I always join the appropriate society (becasue my memebership fee will also help someone else)!!!

Hope this explains well enough.....please ask more questions as you wish.
