Francis & Isabella Barham - where art thou?
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 15:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,
Excuse me if I get any of this wrong but I'm losing my posting virginity with this one!

Can anyone come up with a bright idea where I might find my relatives Francis BARHAM and Isabella (nee Bailey) on the 1881 census?
I can find them both on the censuses up to 1871 in the London/Middlesex area and then they seem to disappear off the face of the earth.   Francis died in 1883 and Isabella in 1899, so 1881 is my last chance to find out where he went before the great cab rank in the sky (you can tell my ancestors were "class") but I haven't managed to find Isabella on 1891 either.   I've tried all sorts of variations of both Christian name and surname;  tried looking around where children are recorded as living but so far no luck.   Do I just have to accept that they went to ground between 1871 and death?

Hi Genie,
I have been trying to find daughter Marri Read-or any connections with Hoxton in 1881 -and this is what I have come up with
1851 Frank /Isabella Barham have 8 children - one is Maria age 2
1861 Francis/Isabella have 7children -one is Maria age 9, they also have 3 lodgers -Henry Pound, Samuel Reed and George Reed
Did daughter maria marry a Read? I haven't found a marriage ???
Francis and Isabella's daughter Isabella did marry Samuel Reed *the lodger of 1861!!
Thought they may have had a daughter called Maria Read, but can find no evidence???
1971 Samuel and Isabella Read have 3 children -one is daughter Isabella age 8 -who by 1891 had married Mark Ralph and had 4children -3 of whom were born Hoxton! also Isabella Ralph*nee Read) had brother William living with them.
I can find no trace of Isabella Read snr in 1891,but have found a death in 1887
Hope these census may help in some way

'lo Joe
Thanks for this.   Isabella died in eighteen ninety nine, not eighty nine, so she should have been on the 1891 census but is hiding at the moment.   Her death was registered as Barham and in Shoreditch district which is where the family spent much of their life (what salubrious surroundings my ancestors lived in - although I'm told it's quite chic these days!).
