Scotland's People questions?
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 19:52 GMT (UK) »
Trying to trace a family with little information available and need to search for them on Scotland's People but would like to get an idea of what to do first.

What I have so far-
Robert McIlroy m.1879 Ireland to Ellen Mary McAllister. One known son b.1879 in Ireland. Not sure if other children born in Scotland.
Question- can births be searched by parents' names like BVRI?

1901 Ellen McIlroy is back in Ireland on her own (Robert comes here later).
Question- how easy might it be to find a 'Robert McIlroy' born 'Ireland' in 1901 census (possibly Glasgow area)?

Meanwhile, a Robert McIlroy m.1900 Ireland to Lizzie Gibson. No trace of them in 1901 Irish census.

Then, grandchildren of Robert & Ellen Mary McIlroy are sent (not all at once) to Ireland from Glasgow.
Helen/Ellen May/Mae/Mary McIlroy born c1903 Scotland.
Question- will her birth record list both parents?

Any answers or suggestions for finding information would be greatly appreciated.

good evening my friend, i would start with ireland first, try the Ulster historian foundation for records, can be costly but worth it, once armed with the info then go to the scottish site which can also prove to be expensive if you do not have the correct info at hand.

Already have Irish records for family- births, baptisms, marriages, deaths, local newspapers, census, valuation, church, gravestones, etc.
Trouble is that they went over to Scotland for a while. I do have names and an idea of dates but wondering how many records I might have to search through before finding correct entries.

hi pal, remember the golden rule about the scottish site

BIRTHS only to 1905

MARRIAGES only to 1930

DEATHS only to 1955

i have spent a fortune on the census before i got a direct member of the family.

i always count a search and hit as a £1, as you can get six searches and six hits, well worth the £6

As Joebhoy suggests you need some facts before you can get the best from scotlandspeople.

I would suggest looking for Helen McIlroy since you appear certain she was born in Scotland.
Use wildcards and enter *el*en M*c*lroy  born 1903 +/- 2 years
Search 'all districts' 'all parishes' unless you can localise the birthplace.

If no result from that try under Mary   -   M* M*c*lroy

There were 30 Mary McIlroy's born in Lanarkshire between 1900 and 1905 so you would need some extra information to narrow this total down.
There were 10 Helen's (5 in Lanarkshire) and you need to remember that sometimes the name was entered as Ellen.
I could find no entries under the name Mae McIlroy.
By substituting the asterisk for a letter each time you can refine your search without it costing a single credit.  It just takes longer.

Remember that the asterisk can represent more than one letter in a search.
