annie,
i downloaded the file it does not tell me much i dont think, although you may be able to see something i cant.
would you take a look for me.
on the link to  NA it states 2 army numbers what does this mean.
one is for gordon highlanders and one for labour corps.
i have come to a dead end because my grandparents were not married so i cannot verify his birth place i am assuming i will have to try to find/buy his service record.
what are the ways of doing this.
heywood and joburg have found  a birth place that seems right.
but i cant confirm this.
my john is the first one on the right.
thanks gary.

Hi
Looking at the Medal Card you have posted to John W Tiplady, it shows that he join the 5th (Buchan & Formartin) Battalion Gordon Highlanders, he did not go overseas until after 1st Jan 1916 as he only as two medals the British War Medal & Victory Medal, however the 5th Battalion had two Battalions the 1/5th & 2/5th, he may have join up to the 2/5th Batt, as this was the training Batt, and it stayed in the UK, at some point after 1st Jan 1916 he was posted to the 1/5th Batt, the 1/5th moved to France in May 1915 & was still there at the end of the War.

At some point he may have been wounded, or became sick, he was moved to the Labour Corps, this unit did not form up until June? 1917. A lot of soldiers who could not fight in the front line units were put in the LC, to work on the roads and as POW guard force.

You could try the RLC Museum at:
The Royal Logistic Corps Museum
Princess Royal Barracks
Deepcut
Camberley
Surrey
GU166RW
Tel 01252 833371
E-mail information@rlcmuseum.com

This is wear the LC/RPC history is at now, thy may help you.

Or you could get a researcher to have a look for his service records at the National Archives. Best of luck
