1861 Census Peterhead - William Barclay
« on: Monday 04 December 06 14:05 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me with this person, my wifes ggreat grandfather.
He was born in Peterhead Nov 1849 and I have found him with his mother, Margaret, in the 1851 Census but his father died in 1850. I have found him in the 1871 Census in Hebburn DUR but would love to plug the gap. His mother Margaret married Peter Allan in Feb 1854 and according to the birth of their children they continued to live in Peterhead until 1861.
His full name was William Lily Ledrum Barclay. Any help would be welcome.

Dear Joe,
Yes Margaret was Williams Mother. The information re 1851 & 1861 Census confirms what I already had, I wondered if Peter Allen had taken his 10 year old stepson to sea with him in the 1861 Census.
The information re burials is new for me.
Thanks for your help.

Hi

I have an interest in Allan's in Peterhead - in 1861 there were only 3 deaths registered for Peter Allan / Allen in the whole of Scotland.  One was a 60 year old man in Greenock - one a 3 week old boy in Aberdeen City and the other in Aberdeen, a 26 year old single man - occupation given as Traveller (Wool Trade) - residing at 30 Union Row, Aberdeen - son of Robert Allan & Janet Wood.  He died on 29 April 1961 - death registered by his brother James.  Taking account of the dates this Peter is likely to be the one buried on 4 May 1861 in Nellfield.

Hope this helps in your quest.

Osprey
Allan / Gordon / Aitken / Milne / Grant / Burnett in Aberdeenshire.  Allan / Alexander / McGowan in West Lothian / Davidson in Fife / Dempster in Lanarkshire / Allan / Burnett USA & Canada

Thank you for the information but I think it's a different Peter Allan as "mine" died in 1883, he appeared in the 1881 Census with his wife and family so I'm fairly certain this is the right one.
