In the 1800s when my ancestors were there, only a handful of the men were allowed to have their wives there. I think my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather was allowed his wife because of his job as a shoemaker (very important for the soldiers!) The women who were there had to cook for a large number of men and in return the couple were able to have a bed in a corner of the room screened off with a blanket while the other bed was used by at least two other men.

I noticed on the 1881 Census that my great grandparents & Family (5 children and mother-in-law !) appeared to have a 'lodger' (one Malcolm McKinnon) registered. Seems confusing since it was a barracks ? I doubt if they would have had separate quarters surely...

I also noted that my great grandmother was described as having "Domestic Duties".

actually, after posting this messages, i realised that there are rather a lot more than i thought.  :-[
so, as an alternative, if anyone thinks they have an ancestor stationed at fort george in 1881, let me know and i will look it up for them. :)

Hi there - hope this post is still active.  I am trying to find more information about a possible forebear of mine who may have been at Fort George.  The 1881 Census shows a James Kirk, more information on this man may help me to decide if he is my Gt Grandfather.  Thank you in anticipation.

I couldn't help noticing how many herring fishermen were in the 78th!
