Can this be right - married at 14
« on: Monday 04 December 06 19:33 GMT (UK) »
Having just received a marriage cert dated 14th Feb 1920 for the marriage of William Orrell (26) and Lily Holbrook (24) Blackburn, Lancashire

So far so good  ;D

It states his Condition as Widower.

Next I went looking for an earlier marriage between 1915 & 1920 of a William Orrell to anybody and found only one in 2nd qtr 1915 Ethel M Emmett

Next went looking for a death of Ethel Orrell and again only found 1 entry in 3rd qtr 1919 aged 18

If this is the right Ethel she was only 14 when she got married.

I have tried to confirm Ethel's date of birth on the 1901 census

Clara Emmett 7 months
Ethel Emmett 1
Sarah Ellen Emmett 27
William Emmett 29

Went to check the complete BMD's at Ancestry but cannot find Ethel, Clara was there in 1900.

So she was 14/15 when they married and he remarried 4/5 months after she died.

Before I send off for certs do you think I am on the right track or have I taken a wrong turn. :D

All I wanted was to comfirm Williams father's name aaarrrggggggggggg its another William.   ???  :(

Regards
Ken

Until 1929 a girl could marry at the age of 12 and a boy at the age of 14.  They needed the consent of their parents if they were under 21.  It didn't happen very often but it was legal.

Hi Ken

Can't speak for whether Ethel Emmett was 14 when she married but I've found 2 more marriages for William Orrell in Bolton area pre-1920.

William Orrell to Jane Thompson Q3 1917 Bolton

William Orrell to Mary Price Q3 1918 Bolton

Could all be a huge coincidence re the death of an Ethel Emmett r could be the right one!

Got to go watch some prog with the kds now - let me know how you get on  :)
