adoption
« on: Tuesday 05 December 06 11:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm not really a beginner but haven't been on for a while.......having solved my first mystery I now have another to investigate.

I'm trying to trace any siblings of my grandmother (born 1919), who was adopted, apparently.  Her maiden name was Barber.  I assumed that this would be the name of the family that adopted her and therefore any siblings would be very difficult to trace.  However, my mum is insistent that her mother's birth certificate had the name Barber on it.  Would this be possible?  Or am I barking up completely the wrong tree?  I have found 2 potential candidates for a Barber, one with MMN Barber (which seems likely for a child given for adoption) in the BMD records on Ancestry (right first name, middle initial, and quarter) but I don't want to pursue this if it's just not possible that either of them is the right person.

Thank you!
Lisa

Would it not depend on the age at which she was adopted?  She could well have been registered as Barber if that was her mother's name, and later adopted.  Or is it known in the family that the the couple who adopted her were called Barber?
