Peter Quinn - missing sailor (Liverpool)
« on: Tuesday 05 December 06 23:11 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any information about a Peter Quinn, a sailor in 1891. He died between 1894 and 1901, leaving a wife Elizabeth. They lived at New Hedley Street, Liverpool?

Other family names being researched are Moran and Mannering.

Thanks

Phil

Hi Steve

Thanks for that but unfortunately I do not think so. I have it that hewas married to Elizabeth Moran in March Quarter 1880 at Liverpool Register Office. We believe that he died between 1894 and 1901 as Elizabeth was shown as widow in 1901 census but they had a child born 1894.

I was wondering if there was anywhere to show which ship he might have been on?

Thanks again for your help

Phil, have you got Elizabeth's age and place of birth from the 1901 census? That would help.

Unfortunately, the 1891 search shows up no Peter Quinns on board vessels at census time, and the Peter Quinn in Bootle is the only one I can see listed as a 'sailor'. But there are lots of other related maritime occupations.

For example, there's one here whose wife is Elizabeth:
RG12/2966 folio 47 page 36

7, Elstow Street, Kirkdale, Liverpool

QUINN, Peter J  Head   Married   45   Ship Rigger   b. USA
QUINN, Elizabeth Wife Married   31   b. Liverpool
ROBERTS, Samuel   Father in Law  Widower   68  Labourer Tea Warehouse
b. Carnarvon
QUINN, Frank A   Brother   Single   36   Mariner  b. USA
DENHOLM, William   Boarder   Single   35   Miller  b. Scotland
GREEN, Joseph  Boarder  Single  49  Mariner   b. Devonshire

Sadly, the father-in-law is called Roberts, not Moran!

Well, in 1891 there are just three matches for an Elizabeth Quinn aged about 31, born in Liverpool.

One of them, as previously mentioned, is the one married to the US-born ship rigger Peter Quinn.

The second is this one. She's married to a sailor, but he's called Thomas, not Peter. Could either Peter or Thomas be his middle name, do you think?

RG12/2964 folio 63 page 9

62 Wykeham Street, Kirkdale, Liverpool

QUINN, Thomas   Head   Married   38  Seaman   b. Liverpool
QUINN, Elizabeth Wife   Married    31  b. Liverpool
TRAYNOR, Phillip   Son   12   Scholar   b. Liverpool
LAWRENCESON, John   Lodger   Single  27  Plate Layer  b. Liverpool

The third Elizabeth is married to a plumber in Manchester called James.

Can't see any other possibilities right now.

Hi Steve

I believe that Elizabeth was living at 89 Hedley Street, Liverpool in the 1891 census - Peter was not with them.

You're right. I think this might have been mis-transcribed in the index, as the writing is quite difficult to read. Possibly Peter was at sea?

RG12/2905 folio 22 page 9

89 Hedley Street, Liverpool

Elizabeth Quinn  head   married  31   b. Liverpool
Mary Quinn   daughter  10    b. Liverpool
John Quinn  son   12    b. Liverpool
Catherine Quinn  daughter   8    b. Liverpool
Elizabeth Quinn  daughter   5    b. Liverpool
Ellen Quinn  daughter   2    b. Liverpool
Mary Moran    mother   widow   70    b. Ireland

Mother's name is a good clue!

I had a look back to 1861 and found this possibility for a young Elizabeth Moran:

RG09/2678 folio 68 page 30

33 Watkinson Street, Liverpool

MORAN, John   Head   Married    45  Dock Labourer   b. Ireland
MORAN, Mary   Wife   Married     43    b. Ireland
MORAN, John   Son   Unmarried  19  Blacksmith  b. Liverpool
MORAN, William Son  13  Blacksmith   b. Liverpool
MORAN, Elizabeth   Daughter  14months   b. Liverpool

Also, this could be Peter Quinn and his family in 1861 family (note Hedley Street). No parents present, though.

RG09/2657 folio 139 page 11

50 Hedley Street, Liverpool

QUINN, Mary   Head   Unmarried   17  House Keeper   b. Liverpool
QUINN, Jeremiah   Brother  14  Scholar  b. Ireland
QUINN, Catherine  Sister  12  Scholar b. Bolton
QUINN, Elizabeth   Sister  10  Scholar   b. Liverpool
QUINN, Ellen  Sister  7  Scholar   b. Liverpool
QUINN, Peter   Brother  5  Scholar  b. Liverpool
QUINN, Joseph  Brother  2  b. Liverpool

Hope that helps.

Steve
