 Hello

Looking for
Robert Bruce -shoemaker -married to Elizabeth Ramsay ? living in Dundee pre 1871 [named as parents by son in 1871 info on marriage certificate.]

Had at least one child also Robert  b. Dundee
This Robert age 20- labourer  m. Helen Brown in 1871
Have followed this pair through to 1901 but cannot find his parents at all -no bmd--[SO MANY ROBERT BRUCES]
Anyone know anything please.

hi emma, the only robert bruce born c1850, on the 1861 census with parents robert and elizabeth was born in aberdeen and living in the old machar area, could this be yours?

Will have to check this, but on all paperwork son Robert always gives Dundee [ sometimes adds Forfarshire] as birthplace, and lived in Dundee 1873 &'76---2 children born there.

Are you certain that his parents were actually married? If the mother's name is listed on the son's marriage certificate as "Elizabeth Bruce MS Ramsay", this means that they were married, or the son believed they were married, or he knew they were not but didn't want anyone else to know. If is just says "Elizabeth Ramsay" then they were not married.

Try looking for a Robert Ramsay in the 1851 census and see what comes up.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
