Do you have any more details ? e.g. wife's forename

The John Middleton I have found on census is consistant with his occupation -Wire drawer?
1841 in Ecclesall Yorks -no wife present
1851 haven't found him
1861 Ecclesall, widower
1871 Ecclesall, widower, living with brother in law John Corker and family
1881 married to Selina -stepdaughter surname Cockayne
If this is the correct John Middleton do you have him in 1851 ?
trying to narrow down when he would marry
if it was post 1841 probably the marriage may have been in Yorkshire????

Hi Suz. I think I've found him, in 1851,he's living in Sheffield with wife Amelia 36,dau.Mary Ann 3, son John 2, dau.Agnes 1 month. Piece 2342; Folio 235;
In 1861 he is down as "Joseph",which I reckon is an error as his wife and children's names are all the same and ages are compatible after 10 years! Piece 3497; Folio 8:
I haven't found him in 1871, but in 1881, he is as you say married to Selina aged 49, his stepson is William Cockayne. Selina is 21 years his junior so I presume this is his 2nd. marriage.
I am looking for his 1st. marriage which I work out as between 1840/1848. Amelia was born in Stoney Middleton.
           regards Alan.

Looks like the ones you found are Joseph
There is this marriage
FreeBMD
Jun qtr 1846
Sheffield
on same page
Joseph Middleton
Amelia Bradley
22 552

and as Teresa Bradley (aunt) was with them in 1851 it looks as if this is the marriage and John 1851 is really Joseph??????
So wouldn't be the John you are seeking?????

John Middleton in 1871 is with his brother in law John Corker and wife Ann.
So maybe John's wife was a Corker(she's certainly a corker to find!!!!!)
Couldn't find any John Middletons married to a Corker
but
did find a possible marriage in 1852 Sheffield district -on same page there is John Corker and Hannah Lambert
so possibly John Middleton was married to a Lambert?????
Found FreeBMD
Marriage 1842
Dec qtr Bakewell (Stoney middleton comes under this district)
on same page
John Middleton
Hannah Lambert
19 349

if this is your John's marriage -the problem is there are numerous deaths for Hannah Middleton in Bakewell and Shefield between 1843 -1861!!!!

Hello Suz,
                 Thanks for all your research.
The person I want is definitely married to Amelia! I thought the name error was in 1861 (John/Joseph), when in fact the error was in 1851 (Joseph/John)) So.... it's not John I'm looking for!  It's Joseph Middleton b. Stoney Middleton c.1811., married Amelia Bradley in Sheffield 1846.
Is he in the Derbyshire Census of 1841?
I can't find him in  the Sheffield  Census.  regards Al. :)

It's difficult to tell which Joseph Middleton is yours in 1841-there are Derbys and Yorks ones who are possibilities-his d.o.b. is given as 1810/11 on various census -so on 1841 (with rounding down) could be between 1805-11.
Maybe his marriage cert would give his father and whether he was married previously???
