It's difficult to tell which Joseph Middleton is yours in 1841-there are Derbys and Yorks ones who are possibilities-his d.o.b. is given as 1810/11 on various census -so on 1841 (with rounding down) could be between 1805-11.
Maybe his marriage cert would give his father and whether he was married previously???

Suz

Hi Suz,
Just received marriage cert. for Joseph & Amelia  30 June 1846 He is Bachelor aged 26, Porter, of Glossop Rd. Father is Christopher I think (Chr.r). She is spinster aged 31 of Broad Lane.
Trouble is ,that in succeeding Census's he down as being ten years older than he is. Also why would he be down as John in 1851 & Joseph in 1861?

Hi Al,
I shouldn't worry too much about the age being 26-he possibly was 36- my own grandfather is on his marriage cert as being 20, when in fact he was 36!! somewhere along the line the 3 had been mistaken for 2 and 6 mistaken for 0!!
my grandmother is age 21 -but she told everyone she lied -as she was only 17!!!-so at least we knew the truth of her age!

Found this family in 1841
Wharn, Dent, Yorks

Christopher Middleton 50 Cotton Weaver
John 25
Betty 12
Bella 10
Thomas 7
Agnes 5
HO107/1322/3 15 2

Joseph could possibly be the eldest son (age wise)
Maybe this Christopher was married twice (age gap in children??)
Thought there may be a connection as Joseph's children had similar names to this family???

What does it give as father's occupation on marriage cert?
And who were witnesses?
may help tracking down the correct Joseph?

maybe Joseph was written as John, because the enumerator misheard- I have come across Joe being written as John before -say Joe Middleton quickly -especially in Derbys/Yorks accent and you can hear it as John Middleton??????

Suz

Christopher Middleton 50
Thornhill, Cresswell, Sisson, Harriman, Cripps, Eyre, Walter, Marson, Battison, Holmes, Bailey, Hardman, Fairhurst Noon-mainly in Derbys/Notts-but also Northampton, Oxford, Leics, Lancs-England

Suz,
Thanks for that, all is becoming a little more clearer now.  I'm quite new to this  "Family Tree" research, and doesn't it make your head hurt!
Anyway Christopher was a Labourer
and the witnesses were a John Hallam &  I Hudson.            By the way,  where is Dent?
