Finding out what medals .... ??
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 22:02 GMT (UK) »
Hiya,

I am definately a nOOb to RootsChat but i was hoping anyone could help me with what could possibly be a silly Q!

I havent researched any of my ancestors forces history but what I do know is that 2 of my Gt Grandfathers had medals awarded! Now these have been "lost" in the family and I dont know what they were! and I would like to know what they were awarded as I am serving also!

So my Question is, Is there anyway to find out how many and what medals were award to my Gt Grandfathers ??

thanks for your help in advance!

Lee  ;)

Hi Lee,
I'm guessing here, but would I be right in saying your g-grandfather's would have been of age to serve in WW1?

If so, you're best starting place is here:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/

Try looking for them under "Royal Navy Seaman" if you think they may have been Royal Navy. Or if army, try searching the Medal Card Index (link top right where it says "WW1 campaign medals")
See what you come up with, and let us know!  :)

Oh excellent! cheers for the offer Mack!

Firstly, i mentioned it to my dad about Cyril Pretoria Bragg's medals and he remembers having lots of his navy docs so i may have a lead on that but my other Gt GF was -

Thomas Henry Lewis, born 07 oct 1895. Served in Kings Shropshire Light Infantry during WWI. Was shot in shoulder and hospitalized in France. Thats all the info i have on him.

Cheers in advance, it feels awkward being a nOOb to all this but we have to start somewhere

Hi Lee,

The medal card for Thomas Henry Lewis 22498 can be download at a cost of £3.50 online from the nation archives site that Neil has suggested. When you go to the page for the 1st world war campaign medals enter Thomas' details in the search bars and click on search and his page should come up then follow the instructions on how to obtain the image.

The same goes for Cyril Pretoria Bragg, only this time you will need to go into the Registers of Seaman's Services on the same site as for above. Cyril's offical number is J50319. born in Wimbledon Surrey 12th April 1900, Catalogue ; ADM 188/747
image ref; 319/319
Again you will be able to download the card image for Cyril for £3.50

if you get stuck on making out the info on the cards post them here and I am sure someone will be able to tell you what it all means.
