i think thats a red herring,  the lanyard doesn't mean he's from a different regiment it just means hes got a clasp knife usually, but there's just about nothing to identify which regiment except that it's not a rifle regiment

the uniform looks around early war ( pleated pockets) your GF would have been around 41 at the start of the war, so the question is how old is he in the photo?
