Was PITMAN Amelia's maiden name ?
« on: Thursday 07 December 06 08:48 GMT (UK) »
I have a Jesse Bliss whose 2nd wife was named Amelia Pitman, I can't find a birth for her, they married in 1849 in Gloucester.  I have looked at some census and found a Amelia Pitman age 22 and it was noted her husband was away at sea (1851 census) and she was listed with the family of Springate, somehow I don't think this is the same Amelia Pitman but I can't get anywhere with other information,  maybe someone may be able to help?  By the way I have found on England & Wales Free BMD Marriage Index 1837-1983 mention of Amelia Pitman year 1849 Quarter Jan-Feb_Mar District Gloucester(1837-1937) County Gloucesterrshire  Volume 11.

Hi Barb,

If you send for a copy of the marriage cert you will see Amelia's maiden name; if she was a widow then that surname will also be shown.  Ages are also shown; though not always accurate!

I had a look at the marriage details you posted and among the grooms is Jess Bliss so that's the right one.

If any children were born their birth certs will also show Amelia's names.

Copies of certs can be ordered on line for £7 from GRO.

HI Nanny Jan,   lost the reply button somehow on end of your reply, but yes I will order the marriage cert. I just thought I could find out another way first as I have so many different Amelia Pitmans details.
\Many thanks   BARB
